I’m 43 for the record; had one meniscus repair on R knee three years ago. Often after a hard leg workout day, my knees are just sore. Probably arthritis or swelling of some kind or just overuse.
Does anyone take supplements for joints at this age? Any else experience sore knees and what do you do other than just wait a day to recover? It’s not a injury type pain, just generalized soreness in the joints.

Fish oil helps a ton with inflammation. I take 3 in the morning and 3 before bed and my tendinitis has really subsided and I lift heavy 3x a week. The morning/night timing is probably not this board’s recommendation (I think the guys on here take a pill every few hours), but it works for me.

Might not work for you, but that’s what I do.

Do you do any type of IF? I am trying to keep IF a staple in my diet and don't want to take the fish oil due to the calories until noon. Would 3 at noon and 3 before bed be too much? I have only been taking the pills for a month or so.

I ice knees after every day of lifting.

I also take a lot of warmup time on my knees and hips if I'm squatting.

Final recommendation, SBD knee sleeves have been incredible for me in the realm of knee support and pain. They're awesome for support and warmth during squatting.

I do IF every now and then for a month or so when I’m trying to shed some bad weight. I don’t see a problem with doing 3 when you break your fast and 3 at the end of it. As long as you’re getting the 8-10g (my caps are 1.5g each) in, it’s fine imo. Experiment around with it and just see what works for you. Some people don’t notice any effects from fish oil. It just works really well for me.

Cool. I'll start playing with it. Was only taking 2-4 a day and about to up that considerably. Thanks for the response.

I'm just a couple of years younger than you and have been lucky with injuries. About two months ago, I did one of those classes with way too many squats (which I try to do weekly or so).

I tend to favor my right side and was attempting to focus more on my left. Hard to tell if I was more balanced or actually favoring my weaker side. I think that led to my left knee having some inflammation, which gradually got better and now is closer to 100%.

Even though I was taking fish oil daily and icing it, it felt weak and would have much more soreness than my right knee.

I do wear knee sleeves. Yesterday I warmed up 25 min on treadmill at high incline. I take fish oil but need to check my dose.

I do IF and only have black coffee in AM and eat between 12-8 and pretty healthy - generally higher protein, lower carb selections. Not a drinker. No inflammatory diseases or conditions.

What brand? I've found brand makes a big difference.

It sounds like you're doing a lot of good things. I would consider the icing after. I've had some overuse issues on occasion when squatting with higher frequency and the icing seems to help.

I have a pair of Nordic sleeves. I got a pair for the price of one from other brands, and they do the job just fine.

Rehband - they are a must on leg day. When I take them off my knees are very warm to the touch so I know they are providing the insulating factor for the fluid viscosity.

I just quit doing squats due to knees and lower back pains. Still do deadlifts and leg presses and knees do better for me.

Fixing form will do wonders for getting rid of these type of issues.

How deep are you going? Squatting deep increases the compressive forces on the patellafemoral joint and that can be easily addressed.

Had a meniscus repair on my right knee and then had the meniscus clipped out later. Left leg needs a meniscus repair but it only gives me trouble every few months.

I wear knee sleeves and take fish oil but the biggest thing I have noticed is whether I have had sugar in my diet. Too much sugar and I can feel a difference in how much my knees ache. May just be in my head.

Yes, but the relationship between compressive force and knee pain and injury is a different thing. An article on point:

What is your leg day?

how else do you prepare besides walking on a treadmill? What do you do afterward if anything?
