Are you looking at the right person? Burt’s the fastest guy in here right now lol

I guess that's part of my problem too. I don't have an idea of where I should be or what's a respectable pace. I'm looking to do a half this spring, still trying to decide which one.

Unless you’re all of the sudden wanting to get into races, any pace is respectable. Run a few 5ks, see where you land and then start shooting for times you think you can get. Or set a goal for your half and do some training and see how far you can go at your goal distance.

Comparing yourself to others is crazy talk, especially if you’re new to it. We’re all at different parts of our journey and all have different goals. Some have been doing this for years, some just getting started.

Burt is way faster than me but I’m faster than other guys in the group as well. I’m also one of the chubbier guys in the group but I can move.

Did a 4 mile recovery run Sat on a cross country course, then 10 this morning at 8:58 pace with an 8:17 last mile. Felt rough in the beginning but smooth at end. Definitely running a half soon, and maybe a full in Feb.

Baby steps man. When I started a year ago I was about 165-170, smoked, and drank too much.

I started running one mile a day for 5 days a week and used the 10% rule every 2 weeks, sometimes 3 if I wasn’t ready. Always listening to my body.

After building a base for about 8 months, I started doing workouts and hill training with a shite ton of push ups.

Now I run like a striped assed ape, am about 140, and you can grate cheese on my stomach.

My one year anniversary is this Saturday and realistically am staring sub 18 in the face for this 5k.

If you’re already doing 10 minute miles with no training for 6, you’re already in the top 10 percent and the fact that you’re doing it at that size is impressive.

That would be an awesome first marathon. You use the Runner's World 3:30 plan?

Keep us posted

No, I have a couple friends that BQ'd (females) and they used this program. It is a modified Hanson/ Higden plan they made. But they had 5 runs a week, I did mostly 2 and 3 runs a week. Always did the long and always did the speed work, sometimes threw in some easy miles one other day when I could.

But I lift 6 days a week so not like I laid on the sofa those other days. Also, I officiate football so that was some cardio and running 2 more days a week.

They get mad that I only run 2-3 days a week and maybe I will end up paying for that, again this is my first one so I will see how it goes

Burt - 10K this Sunday - Do you recall what your training looked like the week before your recent one?

No running today, did some resistance band/ plyo/core work in my driveway.

The week I did the 15 I took Monday off as I always do. Then on Tuesday, I did 6 800 meter repeats a little quicker than race pace with warmup and cool down. Wednesday, I did 8 easy, Thursday 7 moderately, Friday 6 easy, Saturday 4 shake out with 4 strides.

The race was on Sunday.

I think it worked out to be 15-20 percent taper in miles but kept the intensity of the runs the same except I replaced a work out with a moderate run.

Tried to keep the engine “primed” if you will and it works pretty well for me. For 5 to 10ks I might not really change anything other than reduced miles the day before but that’s just me.

Alright guys, I’m generally an evening runner during the week and mid morning on weekend. I recently started a new job where I don’t get in until 10 on Tuesdays and leave at 7 so I’m doing morning runs after Monday night yoga. The problem has been the second I get home, I have to pray my fiancé isn’t in the bathroom. It hits hard and fast. Normally I get in the daily constitutional before the run but these morning runs I don’t have time. Is it a matter of forcing myself up earlier and trying to get it in or is there anything else I should do?

My biggest fear when I eventually run a marathon (have run a few halves without issue) is runners diarrhea. Trying to soothe myself of these fears.

Imodium.

Oh my god, I want to make so many puns but I’ll cut the shtick.

Imodium.

Also, cut the verkakte food.

There. Only two Yiddish words that only kind of sound shite and kaka respectfully.

Left out the phrase “the runs” completely.

Imodium.

That's always been my problem with morning runs - the whole bathroom issue. I try to wake up and give myself plenty of time to take care of business, but it doesn't always work out that way. I only recently discovered the whole imodium remedy. It's a game changer for those long runs and morning runs where things don't line up ahead of time.

Alright guys, I'm back. 3 weeks with a bad foot. 2 weeks passing a kidney stone and topped it off with thanksgiving.

For taking that long off, I did do a 5 mile Turkey trot and did better than expected. 37:30. Did easy 6 miles this morning @ 8min pace.

Got a Houston marathon coming up, this is going to be fun. I think I should be up to 18 mile this weekend. I'll probably do 13 this weekend.

Welp. I've been avoiding this, but I think it's time to admit it.

Louisiana Marathon isn't going to happen for me. I just don't have the time that I thought to properly train right now.

Could I run it? Yes.

Could I run it like I want? No. Not where I'm at right now.

I'm looking at my schedule (work and family obligations) and with the meat of my training really starting, it just isn't going to happen.

It sucks. I really wanted to get a good run in before my 2nd kid gets here in April. But the LA Marathon isn't going to happen. Maybe I can find something local in Feb or March.

Oh well. I'll keep running as much as I can. I need to sign up for some local short races. It's been awhile since I've ran a 10k.

Thanks Burt — I’ll mimick that plan but with less volume, being that your mpw are about double mine. Feels great looking ahead to a race that is <10 miles, as all of mine lately have been 10 or 13.1.

Immodium, got it! When you’re on mile 20 and your sphincter feels funny, diarrhea!
