So here's a question for everyone:

I was sick for two weeks and only got a few runs in. Last weekend I got back to it with a 3 mile run on Friday, a 6 mile run on Saturday, and a 10 mile run on Sunday.

Plan this week was to do a 6 mile run yesterday, a 5 mile speed workout today (1 mile warm up, 3 miles at 5K pace, and 1 mile cool down), and a 6 mile run tomorrow. 15 mile run Saturday giving me 31 miles for the week. That's after doing a 12 mile week two weeks ago and an 18 mile week last week. Would hit a 40 mile week next week, which is back to full training schedule right before a taper.

But now my 4 month old daughter is sick. Two nights ago I got very little sleep but cranked out the 6 miles yesterday. Last night I got 4 hours of sleep and won't be able to run until around 6pm tonight. I don't anticipate getting much sleep tonight.

Would it be better to not run today? I imagine at some point I'm just practicing mental toughness while harming my body if I keep pushing workouts with inadequate sleep. But I also can't do a third week of subpar training, so I'm not sure which is more important. Sleeping or running.

Getting your miles in is important, but so is not running your body into the ground.

Listen to your body. If you feel sluggish, rest.

If you feel like you can get a run in, run.

At this point in your training, missing a mid week run isn't going to hurt you that much. The long runs are the important runs.

I asked this question in another thread, but do any of the runners in here do intermittent fasting? 16/8 method

Fighting the same thing, Stringed, with the one month old re:sleep. Getting my runs in has won out so far. Is it to a fault? Maybe. I must say that having 8 weeks off of work has undoubtedly helped a ton. My job has been baby/running.

Ham - Good question re:IF — I am interested in giving it a shot as I realize the benefits, but pretty useless on an empty stomach, or at least that’s my thinking. Can’t imagine running without fuel, food, etc.

I'm considering the L.A. Marathon now at the end of March. I think I'm officially hooked on this running thing after this past weekend.

Course looks good with lots of sites to see, starting at Dodger Stadium and ending at Santa Monica pier. But I actually enjoy Los Angeles.

That’d be a cool one. I think my first jump up to the full will be a local race, La Marathon most likely. If that goes OK I will look to do some traveling ones.

Honestly I’ve looked at a few condensed 8 week plans to be ready by January, but not sure I wanna push it that quick for my first, or commit to that.

I do IF quite a bit, but I think my eating window is different from most (I do 8 am - 4 pm)

I also usually don’t do it the evening before my long run

Got in 4 this afternoon at HMGP (sub 01:50, 8:20/mile). 33 feels like, felt amazing. 6 @ tempo Monday puts me at 10 miles on the week. Depending on how I feel, I may stretch out for a couple easy miles Friday, before race day Saturday.

Not training for anything, just exercising.

1.5 miles before my workouts. 1.5 miles afterwards. 5 miles on Wednesdays. 6.5 miles on Saturdays. Rest Sundays.

Right at 23 miles per week.

Yesterday was my first run since Saturday. Three miles was an appropriate distance, as my left calf started to tighten up after mile two. Today I did one mile warmup, 3 hill sprints, and then a mile back home.

I think I need to incorporate one day a week for hill sprints if I want to maintain what I've built.

I don’t do Hill “sprints” but I usually do some Hill work every other week. Been a big night and day difference.

My first half marathon had about 1k elevation on it and I was woefully unprepared. Never wanted to feel that terrible again.

We meet 2-3 times a month and do about 4 miles of hill repeats in the mornings. Also, my local trails will usually incorporate about 500 feet elevation on a loop. I have tree trunk legs so they are great for short choppy steps now that I’m in shape for them. I’m not the fastest my my pack, but I can eat them alive on hills usually.

I’ll alternate long hills and intervals every other week unless the hills are short. Then I can do both in the same week. (I count races as speed work too) That combined with a tempo run and that’s all the speedwork I do.

People wondering how I got to an 18min 5k in less than a year? Get 5 in 3. 7 months of base mileage and a job that is super flexible also helps.

Yeah I guess should have said intervals instead of sprints. I was told to run at about 80% of my running pace going up the hill, then work towards increasing the number of times up the hill. Additionally the interval times should be as identical as possible.

I’ve never done any hill work and need to. Problem is, it’s flat as hell where I live. Anybody in the BR area have any spots to share? The levee?

this is exactly what I do

I have a really nice hill about 1.5 miles from my house that is 0.3 miles

perfect for a warm up distance, about 8 or so sprints, then shake out run home

if you have access to a gym/treadmill, full incline sprints are the only thing that I find treadmills useful for

Signed up for a 12k Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. It is through Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, so figure I will just do a casual jog and take in the scenery.

More so I wanted to get out of the house before heading over to my wife's family for the madness. Hahah.
