I've ran marathon distance several times in the past, but that was close to 15 years ago. I'll probably get to 20-22 miles before reducing my mileage for a week leading up to my run. I'm not registering for a race. Just going to go map it out and run it. May need to incorporate the wife for make-shift aid stations.

Ran 30 mins on the treadmill this morning. Looking to sign up for a half marathon in April.

Here in a couple weeks, I’m going to ramp up again to get in the mid sixty range in miles. Got an easy 8ish today to help my legs forget about the long hills from yesterday.

I’m using kind of a hybrid approach to training with my speed work focused on 5-10k speed but my miles more on the Marathon side.

I’ve finally decided that my landmark race is the Run Bentonville Half Marathon current goal still sub 1:25 but I think I can be much faster if I stay healthy.

This board and thread has helped me keep focused and motivated so I want to thank everyone. This is kind of my proxy run group since I don’t have one here in Arkansas.

That’s moving.

I agree on the thread; been my go to for motivation and accountability.

I’ve got mimimal friends that are interested in running, but working on a few. My Dad actually registered for the 5K next weekend (Big Easy) when I do the Half. He’s in great shape, but never really done any running. He’s very active but it consists of work on his land/camp/tractor work, etc. Dude’s legs are jacked though, not sure why I didn’t get any of that.

Another good buddy of mine (cross fitter) whom I grew up working out with is close, but he’s still teetering. He can’t fathom waking up @ 4 am and driving to New Orleans to run a race. Can’t blame him because I would have felt the same a year ago. Ha

Have you run this before? That was a tough tough race last year

This group has been awesome for me as well. I check in at least a couple times a day

What’s everyone’s take on implementing training other than actual running? For time’s sake, I feel like I’d have to drop some gym time if I wanted to bump the mileage up for say, Marathon training. Not opposed to it, just curious if anyone does only running workouts?

I’m aware. I feel like a finish like that gives me an advantage because I love me some hills.

That being said, I’ll probably cry like a baby the whole way up.

My idea for the full is to fully enjoy the experience and not worry about my time. I want to participate in a scenic one that I will enjoy the run and not think of the miles. The company I work for works heavily with TCS, so I'm going to get my name in the hat for the NYC marathon next year. If not that one, I may do Washington D.C. or LA.

I do crossfit 3-4x a week

Crossfit has a lot of sprints incorporated in the workouts, so that is what I use a lot of times for my speedwork

Seems to be a huge part of beginner plans (Hal Higdon) and a lot of runners I respect on IG incorporate some sort of strength training. That said, there are many runners who just run but utilize specific workouts (hills, sprinting on tracks, etc) that provide more muscle building.

I haven’t done any cross training and wish I had. I feel like I’m getting weaker overall as I’m not doing anything for anaerobic exercise besides elevation gains on my runs.

Any direct leg work on the lifting days or all upper body?

As I mentioned before I’ve dropped around 15 lbs and most of that is muscle. I’d say maybe 10 lbs of muscle, 5 fat. I feel like I can stand to drop some more upper body muscle, but I can’t bring myself to just neglect it totally and let it go. Just trying to balance everything best I can.

I struggle with whether or not to hit legs hard in the gym still, as it’s usually in my head that I’m recovering from a run or preparing for the next one and trying not to be too sore.

@ Salmon - I’ve done some Crossfit stuff lately and enjoy it, but I’ve got a gnarly winged scapula (below) which makes many of the workouts tough because of the shoulder aspect. One of the reasons I picked up running to begin with.

Only leg stuff I do during training block is deadlift, 3 days before my long run so I’m recovered. I did have a dedicated leg day before my training started.

I also do core/abs twice a week on my lift days

I’ve lost some muscle but mostly fat. Probably need to lose more of both if I’m going to see how fast I can get

With a more triathlon background, I typically do more than run, but for the last 3 months have focused 90% on running. Training for a full marathon, I'm only running 4 days a week. 2 shorter easy runs, 1 medium difficult run, 1 long easy run. probably going to average around 35 miles per week over the next 12 weeks. I don't expect to light the world on fire with that mileage, but I'm confident in it being enough. Reason I'm not doing more is I'm starting to incorporate cycling and swimming back into the mix. Mondays are swim nights, Tuesdays are easy bike rides on the trainer. I have a half ironman 2.5 months after the marathon, so I can't just ignore it until after. Doing enough to keep a base there. I tried doing weights on the remaining free day and it was just too much for me.

Question - I've been recovering from knee pain (runner's knee?) for the last two weeks. I've only been walking since then and my knee no longer hurts anymore, but it's pops a pretty fair amount when I'm a couple miles into my walk. Is this normal? I'm trying to avoid going to a PT

i usually lift two days a week and do a HIIT with my wife after my trail run on Saturday. i do that to not be scrawny as a runner... not so much because i love lifting.

That looks like a terrible route that every one would be aggravated by the finish line.
That's some serious hill climbing at the end.
I'd hate it.
