Always appreciate the advice in this thread so I come bearing a noob question.

Training for my first marathon. Did my long run of 8 miles Saturday (usually doing them on the weekend) however this coming week is really busy with a lot of travel so today (Monday) was the best day schedule wise to get my long run in. Is there any detriment in backing them up like this? I did 8 Saturday, rest yesterday and started off this week with 9 today. I plan on doing 3-5-3 the rest of the week when able and then next week is a scale back week. So my next long long run won’t be until 11 miles probably 2 weeks from this coming weekend. Just want to make sure I’m not screwing myself here. Thanks y’all!

Don't overthink it. Following plans can be a bit stressful and overwhelming trying to hit every day. Personally I just make sure I'm getting the miles in on a weekly basis, the structure of the week may not be exactly what's laid out in the plan. I would get more concerned with sticking to it exactly the later you get in the plan, closer to race day.

Conditions look superb in Baton Rouge for Marathon day Sunday. Gonna hurt not being out there, but sticking to my plan. Likely nothing else till Eugene.

300 miles away and it's starting to look grim for anyone starting outside of Corral A and finishing after 11 am.

Start-line temperatures for the Houston Marathon will likely be in the mid- to upper-50s, climbing toward a high in the mid-70s with a decent amount of humidity.

Decided my next marathon will be in North Dakota between the months of November and March.

How many miles?

I'm struggling from a motivation standpoint to get up early and do anything. I run or go to the gym every evening, but I need to start doing easy runs in the AM.

I think he was just saying to get whatever miles in that the plan calls for in the week. In general the plan is structured in a way to "be the most productive", but moving days around one random week isn't a big deal.

you've mentioned not being able to get your weekly mileage any higher several times. what does your normal weekly run plan look like and how many miles would you like to hit? maybe you need a more focused plan to get best bang. example if only running 3-4 days maybe you don't need that "easy"or the easy run needs to be high mileage so you're sort of accomplishing two things at once.

I had a major hip issue. Once I added heavy weights at the gym, that has steadily improved. In fact, my 8 miles today was amazing and didn’t feel anything from that hip at all. So, I lose 3 evenings every week, but I can’t skip it. Getting motivated in the AM is the answer.

With that said, I still get 30-40 miles a week in.

I had terrible hip issues. Went to a pt and he tested my hip strength — it was almost non existent. Had me do clamshells and side lying leg lifts regularly and things got so so much better. No more issues.

Ran the half marathon course as a preview with a bunch of folks. Same sprint deal as the last long run: 140HR for 3/4s of a mile then a 1/4 mile spriint at 160+. Not sure if it was the cold, being on the course with that many people, or what, but I finished in just over 2hrs. Which is great for a slow run.

Conditions in BR were perfect yesterday. Much better than last year’s wind. For all who ran Louisiana & Houston, how did your race go?

New to running here. Any tips on dealing with or preventing knee pain? Is it just normal since I’m starting a high impact activity? It seems mostly in the back or maybe inner side of both knees. No prior knee injuries.

When I first started I had a lot of knee pain that would go away as I ran. I think it was soreness in those ligaments that don’t get used a lot when you aren’t running. If I remember it all cleared up in a couple of weeks.

Most of that goes away as you continue to run same with shin splints.

Could not have asked for better weather for the LA Marathon. A little chilly at the start, but absolutely 0 wind. I ran the Half, it was my first race longer than 5 miles. I felt great, happy with my time. It was within seconds of my 13.1 training run, and that was on a completely flat surface. Not that the course was hilly, but the North Blvd overpass with less than 2 miles to go took a lot of steam away from my final kick. Saw plenty of people struggling to get up it.

Very well organized, and the festival afterwards was pretty good. Only complaint was there was no medal engraving, which would have been nice.

154' of elevation gain is what the website says. Is that right?

Ran the Mercedes Course this weekend here in Bham. My Garmin says 754' of gain.

I’m sure it’s correct.
Don’t poo poo our course until you’ve lived your entire life at or below sea level. We can only train on what’s close to us. A bridge or overpass is usually the highest point in most cities in S LA

ETA: Strava has my run with 184’ of gain. Maybe I’ll get to Everest next year.

Oh, I get it. The hills I run here are brutal to you, but nothing to someone out West. I'll post another challenge for a brutal elevation race Bham has in the Spring. 15K with 710' in it.

Same here, when I picked up running again early in the pandemic I had constant knee and shin splint discomfort.

I ran through it and it went away relatively quickly. My guess is you can tell the difference between an actual injury and innocuous discomfort.

Houston was pretty good until about 10:00 when the sun finally broke through the clouds. Memorial to Allen was hot but not something I wasn't prepared for. This is coming from my general recollection of the race. I haven't dove into the splits just yet.

Plan going out was to stick with the 3:40 pace group for as long as I could. That was a great plan until for some reason the two pacers weren't going at the same pace. One was maybe 800m ahead of the other and I felt I was pacing better with her so I pushed ahead.

Finally used a pacing band and that was really helpful to keep me in line with my time. I recall being right on pace for 3:40 until mile 21. Went to refill my Gatorade and had it full but dropped it trying to put on the cap. Volunteer politely picked it up and refilled it for me but put me behind a minute or so. Last 3 miles were just hot, but I tried not losing too much time.

Stopped around Mile 25 to see the family which was much needed and then pushed to the end.

Final time was just under 3:42:46, a 10 min PR but I feel I could have gotten under 3:40. I'm happy with it though and moving on to the next one at some point. Taking a nice long break though.
