I was lazy with my training plan and am using the Garmin coach built into my watch. I liked that it preloads the workouts. Right now, it has me running 4 days a week with Wednesday being speedwork - pretty much always some form of intervals 2 on/2 off, 3 on/3 off, etc. I play adult soccer on Thursdays too, so I get some good change of pace there.

Seems like I’m on the right path, I’ll back off on every week and maybe work in some longer tempos during my long run every 3 weeks or just when I’m feeling up for it.

What would you recommend for tempo distance when doing this. Like I said, I tend to do intervals. I’ve done 3 x 3 miles and 2 x 4 miles. Should I do a longer stretch instead? Maybe try 7 or 8 miles a little slower than goal pace?

*Edited to clarify that last sentence.

I think the way you’re approaching it is perfect. Gradually building into getting in one or two 7-9 mile tempos (depending on how much longer you have until race day) before your race should put you in a good place to make sure you’re able to sustain your goal pace. I would try to target getting the last one in maybe 2/3 weeks out from race day as like a keystone workout before your taper.

Planning to run the Laketown 10 miler as my half marathon tune up. I think it’s January 3rd. Probably aim to run 7 or 8 miles at goal pace and coast the rest.

That’s a solid plan I think!

I’ve actually found a few YouTube vids, and they’ve mentioned many of the things you recommended. Good to know. Thanks.

You should check out Jay Johnson’s SAM videos/PDFs online. They are easy to pepper in after runs for strength and mobility. Start with phase 1 Easy. Do them immediately after runs, as the protocol is intended to build strength for the end of races when your body starts to fall apart. It’s extra work after your runs, that doesn’t actually involve running longer. And it’s an easy and quick way to get some strength training.

This goes for anyone; would recommend checking them out!

Welp, my planned half marathon tune up race had a date change and now takes place after my half. So heads up to anyone looking at the Laketown Distance Fest - moved from 1/7 to 2/4.

My half is 1/29/23, have the following options now:
- Jackson Day Race 9k (5.6 miles) 1/8/23
- Louisiana Quarter Marathon (6.6 miles) 1/14/23
- Just go run a 8 or 9 mile tempo on my own.

Any input? Leaning toward the last option, though tough to get into a race mindset on a solo run.

So uh…anyone else an idiot like me and go out in shorts this morning? Probably the closest I’ll ever get to an epidural

I'm planning on doing four miles in short in an hour. I always get hot on runs and the only thing that ever really bothers me is my hands.

6 miles at 28 degrees with like 12 mph wind. Hands were freezing even with gloves.

Yeah. Ran at noon yesterday and it wasn’t fun. We have a Christmas Eve charity jog this AM, but I’m calling it. It’s fricking 9 here today. Guess I’ll go to the gym and do the treadmill instead.

Felt like 4 yesterday compared to 9 today, but running in the sunshine was the ticket. Very cold here in the dark this morning!

Yeah. Hitting the sunshine was great, then here came the 10-20 mph winds. Every. Damn. Time. My moustache had ice in it when I got done.

Did a 3 mile recovery on the treadmill today and threw some weights around. Finally made the full transition to the zero drop barefoot shoe. Been averaging 30+ miles a week the last couple of months all in my Vivo Primus.

Yeah frick all that, my arse is on the treadmill

I had a frozen beard once last year and that was it for me for sub-freezing temp running.

Much warmer here today. Ran late this afternoon and did a long run with tons of elevation and one really long downhill. 11 miles at 138 HR.

Anyone find they run much better when the humidity level is sub 50% vs most days when its 95+%.

Yea baw, pretty much everyone

Much tougher to sweat & properly cool off when it’s very humid.

It’s love and hate. Chafe seems to be more prevalent for me when it’s less humid and cold
