I live in OH. Had a nice, cool, 5miler this morning around 58 degrees. Couldn't have been happier.

How many mpw yall shooting for marathon training?

Hey guys,
I ran a few half marathons in my early 20s (stress reliever in college) without much thought in shoes or any kind of training program. Well I'm now 8-9 years older and out of shape (relatively speaking) and I've set a goal of running in the St. Jude Half Marathon in December.
Saying all of that, I've never bought a pair of dedicated running shoes -- by that I mean I just ran in the tennis shoes I had, but I feel like that's something I need to do and I was wondering y'alls recommendations. I've read about going to a running store and letting someone else take my measurements and getting fitted for shoes.
Is this something y'all recommend? Or is it overkill? My thought was to just go to Fleet Feet and more or less let them tell me what to buy. Should I look elsewhere? Are there any particular brands that I should look at?

I’d recommend going to a running store (ideally a Fleet Feet so you can utilize their 3D scanner) to try on as many shoes as possible. If you do a gait analysis with them, I’d bank on them saying you pronate and need stability shoes. Don’t take that advice.
The reality is if you’ve run pain free in regular tennis shoes, those were likely neutral. I doubt you need any additional stability.
Try on a bunch of shoes from a bunch of manufacturers, get what feels best.

Got it. I’ll plan on trying Fleet Feet. So there’s not a market leading “you have to have this shoe” per se, but more of a figure out what’s best for you

That’s how the thinking and science used to be but more studies are coming out showing the best running economy is the one that is comfortable to the runner and doesn’t result in injury. Changing your gait via stability shoes or a totally new running form could lead to more injuries.

This 100% if you can. I went to Fleet Feet to buy some shoes for a 1/2 IM and went with HOKA's because I liked the look and how soft they were. Bought them. Ran 3 times. Blisters everywhere. Took the back. They ran the scan and we tried on a few options. I went with some New Balance Fresh Foams and they are the best running shoes I've ever had. Great company.

I have a pair of the invincibles that I got for longer slower miles while training for Badwater. Took maybe 50 miles to get use to them but they just don't do it for me. I think maybe I should have gone 1/2 size up as toe box feels narrow. Hopefully you like them more than me. I seem to be the odd one out since most people love them.

Yeah, I tried the Peg Turbo 1’s and wasn’t a fan so I’ve always been skeptical of ZoomX for me personally. These are much higher stack and likely a different formulation/durometer so hoping they can be easy/long run shoes once my Asics Gel Nimbus Lite 2 get retired.
I really wanted the Novablast 3 but am resigning to the fact they will be impossible to get until probably next year. Lots of hype and delayed release.

Went up to northern Minnesota this past weekend for Superior 100 and I failed. I didn't spend adequate time on trails to prepare my body for the beating this race can dish out. Came into the 72 mile aid station around 21hrs (race has 38 hr cutoff) and my knee just wasn't wanting anymore. I sit here now knowing I should have at least tried to keep going but I had mentally convinced myself I wouldn't have made it another 30 miles to the finish. Now I have to deal with that unknown and failing at what I went there to do.
One thing with setting race goals and just life challenges in general is being able to accept the possibility of failure. I struggled with this hurdle and missed years of racing because I was scared to fail and worried what others would think if I did "bad". Failing isn't the real problem; it's when you justify it by making excuses and then continuing down the same path that got you there in the first place. Normalizing failure just makes you complacent and the cycle repeats.
For the race itself, if you like trail running this is a race that will challenge you. 102 miles 95% single track 40k feet of elevation change and nonstop rocks and roots to navigate. Race is very well organized and has full aid stations with ample volunteers to assist with whatever you may need. Race also offers 50 mile and marathon distances. Website is loaded with pics. LINK /

Here's where you lost me......

Been trying to fix a bunch of nagging issues: IT Band, plantar, and sesamoid. Been spending more time in the gym with weights trying to address these as long term hurdles. I highly recommend Knees Over Toes. Every problem I had was addressed with that program.
I have a 5K next weekend. First time I've raced in a while. Put in 20 miles last week. Lots of slow base building stuff.

Still touching the mid 80s on my afternoon runs here in SELA. Better than mid 90s though, so it's progress.
Regarding your knees over toes post, are you paying for the program or did you find it somewhere "else"? I've got some of the same issues: IT band, piriformis, etc. I was considering trying it out but wasn't sure it was worth the price, how it's fits into your running schedule, all that good stuff.
