The San Francisco Marathon apparently is this weekend. Part of the course apparently goes through federal park service property, and they will be forcing runners to wear a mask while running through that part of the course. Something like 7 miles of running in mask according to Reddit.
How absurd is that.

We had a Xmas run last year with my run group. One lady, that I've never seen again, ran the entire 6 miles with a mask on. It was crazy. Surprised she didn't die.

Same shite different day. Tempo…
Wind was blowing like hell and it was warmer than it should have been. An hour and thirty five total.

I'm getting the itch again to run a marathon. My target is Fall 2022, as I have low hopes for training during the winter and the race would either need to be before May or start training on or after Memorial Day. It's looking like two good options are the Montreal Marathon (end of September) and the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon (early October). May also consider the lottery for the NYC Marathon.

Your 8min warm up pace is my race pace.

Burt what’s your goal for NYC? Right now it seems like you’re on track for 2:2X

I don’t really have one. I don’t care for the distance and this entry is from 2 years ago before I really knew I hated running longer than an hour. If the weather isn’t perfect, I’m not racing it. Pretty jaded about racing in general, really.
Edit: To get my shot in... The wind is calm and it's fricking cooler outside than when I was busting my arse at 4:30am this morning. IMO teachers get the vitriol on this board that weathermen deserve. I wish I could be wrong about everything all day long every day and still keep my fricking job.

I did a few runs with a mask on just to see last spring. It obviously was miserable but doable.
Some Sunday mornings I go out for a run in a park and every time I pass the same guy walking in scrubs, double masked at 6 in the morning.
I remember runners world had an article elite level marathoner run and take his o2 levels along the way and said “see my o2 levels were fine.”
Well you’re an elite marathoner and you know you were miserable AF the whole way. People acting like adding that while running is not a nuisance are FoS.
I’m not anti-mask at all in proper situations, but outdoor running is the one of the most pretentious for-show things ever.

not trying to turn this thread into a masks thread, but this conversation reminded me of the UTMB broadcast
at the start, everyone, even the runners, were wearing masks
all of the runners immediately took the masks off as soon as they started running
then at the finish, hardly anyone, not even the spectators were wearing masks, and the runners were running in high fiving, hugging all of these random fans as they made their way to the finish

How on earth do you keep your HR below 140 running 7:4X miles

It’s all theater. Especially in outdoor settings.
The amount of high profile people that take masks off outdoors or indoors when they think the cameras are off of them makes that pretty apparent.
Again, I think in a classroom setting or church, there’s decent arguments to be made but at an outdoor race it’s pure idiocy and performative.
When it first hit last March (which was the demise of my running career till lately) I had a few guys in my running group run with masks and want to stagger 5 minute intervals. Interestingly, I run with a few Drs and their private opinions are a fair bit different than their public ones.

Exactly. I run religiously with my HR monitor and have no idea how he does this. I've notice my 160 target HR pace has started to get faster, but no where near the 7:45 mark. I have presumed that the key to running faster is to get my HR down, but I have no idea how to do it.

I've gotten a little bit better too. But nowhere like Burt

The short answer is by not worrying about my heart rate. The slightly longer answer is: by running really hard when I need/am supposed to, and easy when I don't.
The last 3.8 years I've put in about 12000 miles, and not a single one of them has been without purpose. I don't skip runs if the weather is bad. I don't skip workouts if I don't feel well. I don't throttle myself when it's time to acclimate... Which means I don't have to start over every couple of weeks because I just didn't feel that day, week, month.
Heart rate is one of many metrics that can be used to measure fitness, but it's only useful when combined with many other variables. Sometimes focusing purely on heart rate gives people tunnel vision and prevents folks from training holistically. My HR max is about 182-186 and it doesn't matter one lick to me when I'm running, it's just an afterthought post run for me.
TLDR: Consistency.

BRM....
its that time again.. the monthly heart rate I don't understand why mine is so high, I'm in super good shape postings.
Why is BRM's warm up at 8 min pace.... short and sweet 12k miles in 4 yrs, he doesn't skip runs or take off for 3 months b/c its hot, runs with a PURPOSE.
This isn't rocket science or even Covid mask research..
want to run faster...run more
want to have lower heart rate at faster pace...run more and not at your current pace that meets your desired heart rate, commonly known as conditioning.
Rant over. I cant figure out my freaking knee/leg issues which has me barely running so now I'm just jealous of others' miles.
T-Alley- you gonna need more than 3 minutes to beat him..

I don't skip runs either, but I'm only doing 1200 miles a year which I thought was pretty good. I didn't realize I was 4x short of Burt's target!

Fo sho. My HR will be 284 running at a 6:45/mi pace while Burt's will be 72 running at 5:14/mi.

8.5 miles tonight. Average HR 164 and paced at 9:40/mile with 500’ of elevation. Had some twinges tonight. Nothing serious.
Fixed it. 500’ of gain.
