I run hills because I live in Birmingham and have no choice.
There are three hills by my house and they cover any conceivable route I can use.
Hill 1: 200' of climb over 1/4 of a mile. It's basically straight up.
Hill 2: The Beast. 500' of climb over 1.5 miles. I've not made it up this one without walking....... YET.
Hill 3: This is my weekly Thurs route. 400' of climb over a mile. Only stop on this one is a road crossing at a traffic light. It's 50/50 if I have to stop. Last night I did.
The hills really help your running IMO. The biggest boost is mental. When I come up to a big hill on race day, it's not intimidating at all. In fact, I look forward to them. What I've discovered racing so far is that EVERYONE is fast going downhill. Very few are fast going up hill.

This is awesome, they have guys out there with go pros live streaming on course.

Yeah I'm watching the livestream too. Europe knows how to cover ultras.
I guess Dylan Bowman is becoming the go-to broadcaster. Dude is having an awesome year. Set multiple FKTs. 3rd place at Hardrock. And broadcasting 2 of the biggest ultras in the world.

Yeah watching western states there seemed to be a lot of technical issues. This is so smooth.
Courtney dauwlater leading the ladies. Didn’t realize she dnf’d hard rock.

The first time I ran trails, I went out in a pair of casual Under Armours after a decent rain. Busted 5-6 times, actually managed to puncture the sole of my shoes, gained a scar that I still have to this day, and got lost. But it was a lot of fun

So..... They split this race into sections? It's 106 total miles right? And they run it in two sections?
Posted on 8/27/21 at 3:24 pm to Aubie Spr96
No
There are multiple different races and different lengths going on
Currently you are watching the CCC finishers, which is 62 miles
the UTMB is 105 miles and is the premiere race

I actually feel better after a 50 mile trail race than a road marathon. You’re not redlining it the whole time and you get to walk up all the hills. Thrown in the aid stations with bacon and booze, it’s hard to go back to the roads.

Completed my first half marathon this morning in 1 hour 48 minutes, 8:10/mile
Good or bad for a first half marathon?

Great job. Any time you can get that first one sub 2 hours, you’re killing it.
What were you aiming for? How were the temps, the course, etc?

Also, wishing the best for all y’all down there. Hate this so much.

My goal time was 8:30 per mile pace so I beat it pretty easily. But miles 8 to 11 were tough. I didn't eat anything before and only had 1 100 calorie CLIF gel shot at mile 8. I would have had another but they are so thick and I wasn't sure of the water situation because you need to wash it down with a decent amount of water.
Course was pretty flat next to the Trinity River. It was still dark at start so the first 2 miles or so were running through walls of bugs and gnats. Had to rinse off lots of bugs in the shower after.
I will do cycling next but I want to train for the Cowtown Marathon at some point whether it be Feb 2022 or 2023. How long after a half marathon until you are ready for a full? How long do you need to train for a marathon? Is it harder to train in cold weather?
