As many of you know, my friend and I are using the "FIRST" marathon training plan for our upcoming marathon in mid-January. Here is a link to the plan: LINK.

We don't actually begin training until September 28. In the meantime, I'm going to be focusing on medium distance runs at marathon pace, long runs at a slower pace (10:00 or so per mile), a few tempo runs just to get my feet wet, a few hard bikes, and a few easy Z2 recovery bikes.

I hope that plans works for you. I have a hard time understanding how one is expected to run their Planned Marathon Pace (10k + 45 sec, according to plan) when the plan only has you running that pace for a max of 9 miles. The long runs are all Planned pace + 15-45 sec. Also don't think the weekly mileage totals are going to truly get one prepared. But you know what they say about opinions...

6.5 miles this AM at an 11min/mile pace and average HR of 141. Cooler out there, but still real humid. Felt pretty good. Lowered my pace by 30 sec per mile compared to last week. Guessing it was just the lower temps.

Cardiologist tomorrow for a checkup. Plan on asking him all kinds of HR questions.

I appreciate your feedback. I'm a little concerned about the volume too. Can anyone shed some light on the longest run at marathon pace in other marathon training plans? I have plenty of time to start anew.

Interested to hear what the board has to say. The FIRST plan worked for me for a half, but I know I’m in the minority there.

Trade one of those cross training days for a medium long run. 6-12 miles at easy pace

Yesterday felt like one of the hottest runs of the summer. Couldn't run in the morning so I ended up going around 11 am and it sucked. At this rate, we won't see cooler temps until December.

2 miles this AM barefoot on the local astro-turf soccer field. 7:45min/mile pace but only for 2 miles. Easing into this and I have a 6 mile hill run this evening. Felt amazing out there this AM.

as long as you are actually cross training on your cross training days, I don't hate that plan

I've known plenty of people that run marathons that only run 3 days a week

if/when I train for another marathon/ultra, I'll more than likely only run 3 days week and do crossfit the other days

I did a 15 mile bike in 52:38 today (17.1 mph). My average HR was 149. Is that sufficient?

This seems logical.

I would think so

also increase volume with your running volume and you should be fine

Marathons and ultras are interesting because if you look around at the crowd, a shitton of the runners don't appear to be necessarily the top, most physically fit people. But they get through the race in the middle of the pack.

My goal is to finish in under 4 hours.

Burt, ks, etc., anyone else have any thoughts as to (a) adding a run day and subtracting a cross-training day and/or (b) increasing the volume of cross-training?

I promised Burt I'd follow this plan as written, and that's my plan, but if y'all think otherwise, I'll reconsider.

I'm sorry for not reading your prior posts. Is this your first marathon?

I've run trail ultras, but I'm running my first road marathon this winter. I'm excited to have a pacer.

I'm doing a marathon plan that only has 1 cross training day and 5 actual running days.

Yes.

I have run two prior half marathons. The first (March 2020) was in a 1:56:00 range, and the second (April 2021) was at approximately 1:53:00. I've been running somewhat regularly since the fall of 2018 and biking often, especially lately, since the fall of 2020. I am 6'0", 172 lbs, and eat pretty healthy, if any of that helps.

Here is the plan, so I can get accurate feedback.

Mondays - 15 mile zone 2 bike
Tuesdays - speed work for approximately 3 - 5 miles (sprints in various distances significantly faster than marathon pace)
Wednesdays - 15 mile bike (140+ HR and at least 17 mph)
Thursdays - mostly tempo runs ranging from 4 - 10 miles with most miles at marathon pace or slightly faster
Fridays - 15 mile bike (140+ HR and at least 17 mph)
Saturdays - rest
Sundays - long run (this run is slower than marathon pace, generally by about 45 seconds per mile, and is in the following distances: 8, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 10, 15, 16, 12, 18, 13, 20, 13, 8)

The most obvious thing to consider replacing would be the zone 2 bike, which I could replace with a zone 2 run simply to get more time on my feet. I can also add distance to the non-zone 2 bikes too as the plan progresses.

I'm the wrong person to ask about advice.

But my plan just involves 1 day of cross training. I use the stationary bike at the gym. It also includes one day where I double up and do a run plus strength training.

There's a million ways to get there. I'm sure you'll do great.

Everybody has a "plan" that works for them. My biggest issue with the plan you posted a link to was the lack of miles at goal pace. the only miles it had at goal pace or faster was the 3-5 mile "speed" day. Running the long run at goal pace +45 secs just doesn't work in my mind especially when the weekly mileage is 30ish. Not sure how one is to run goal pace for 26 when the plan never has you running that pace for any real distance.

cross training with bike rides is great but run fit and bike fit are two different things. I gather you don't want to run more than 3 days but since you do have one full rest day I would probably drop a bike day and pick up another tempo day.

again these thoughts are only based on what has made me feel prepared on race day.
