I have the Next and the Alphas. Alpha is tighter but more forgiving if that makes sense. You could have just texted me

After work and running errands I motivated myself to go run. It's been tough this week, not going to lie here. It's dark out when I get up, sunset is around 6:30PM, and it was cold + rainy at the beginning of the week. Today was the complete opposite- dry and 80°. Tomorrow's high is supposed to be 50°.

I just gotta get those miles in before I'm buried in snow.

Last long run today. 8 slow miles for 8 long days until the marathon.

I’ve got 6 pacers along the route running with me at various points. I’ll hit the 4 actual boroughs throughout (Staten Island is part of New Jersey, fight me). I’m donating $50 in each of their names to a charity of their choice to keep the charitable aspect of marathon running alive.

If at least 5 of you run on next Saturday or Sunday and tag me in it on Strava, I’ll donate $50 in the name of Tigerdroppings to some Louisiana-based charity (open to suggestions, nothing political, would like it to be something possibly running or fitness based but am open).

I’ll do that!

14 total today. 2 X 4 Mile hilly route with Varsity Sports group, with a 2 mile pick up through the “hills” each loop. 8 @ 7:57, 485’ feet if gain, haha.

Topped it off with a 6 mile Lake Loop.

HB If it ends in a 4, delete it. If it ends in a 6 that’s the one. I switched jobs about a year back.

QM, don’t you put that evil on Jersey. Staten Island trash is the reason the garden state has a bad name. Staten Island should be a penal colony, lol.

I had my first week over 40 miles since maybe 2006/7 with a long run of 12. According to this training plan, my long run will get up to 2 hours with regular runs over an hour, so I think I will end up hitting 50 miles a week.

Virtual marathon recap:

Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. My mindset going in wasn’t to have a PB. I wanted to focus on consistent splits around 10:00 and keep the HR down. Started out ok, a little slow but at 4:20 am it was what I had. Then it started. Had a stomach blowout at mile 6 and had to swing by the house to handle that. Stomach never felt right after that.

The next 5-6 miles went by really easy. Right on pace, HR below 150 and then my fueling failed me. My blowout really took out more than I expected. My stomach felt empty and hungry. I ate through my waffles and gels by mile 18. All I had was my Gatorade and I sucked it down fast. Stopped for water at a park and that lasted me to mile 25 when I could get back to the house for more fuel to finish.

Needless to say those last 7 miles were terrible and I mentally gave up. I finished but my pride was left on a sidewalk at mile 19. 4:45 is a long way from my 4:05 in January. I’m using it as a learning experience and not making excuses. I’m just disappointed.

Damn dude. That’s rough. Just saw your Strava post and was wondering what happened. Good learning for January though. 4:20 is tough on the stomach. At least you’ll be able to start later in January.

Yup. Didn’t do anything different from other training runs. Are the same breakfast-lunch-dinner the day before. Same breakfast this morning but it just didn’t sit well. I’m also really feeling some discomfort in my right ankle. Not sure what I did but it’s a new pain and I’m not enjoying it.

Kballa,

Obviously you aren't happy but this is a very good lesson for us 1st timers related to your fight & resolve...

I know 11/21 won't be pretty but that's the exciting part for me ..learn to fight through it and learn what is going to be different next cycle.

Thanks for the transparency.

I’m sure in a real race setting I wouldn’t have mentally given up as early as I did. The few people I had to meet me along the route and run were encouraging and helped keep my spirits up. Taking the kids in the stroller for the last mile was nice as well.

If I do it again I’ll commit to sleeping in a little more and preparing as if the race started at 7 and not leave the house until my stomach is completely evacuated.

Just had good weekly call with my coach and it is getting close to max volume & intensity this week. It will be my most miles since I started running.

49 miles
Speed workout with 800's & 400's at my VO2max range.

We will see how I feel then discuss how my taper will look. He did tell me that he programs a more aggressive taper , not a lighter Higdon type, and he is confident my body has found a routine and my nutrition/rest/stretching is where he wants it to be.

He did mention I might be on his higher mileage plan for March which might get me to 55+ but he has to see how I continue to hold up.

Roots,

Thanks.

I made the mistake of asking about race day pace last week and he asked me "you racing tomorrow?" Haha.

Told me to focus only on the plan , the next run, and we will have a strategy/pace call the week before the race. He said if I focused on a number I'd be chasing it during training and break from his plan.

He did say the exact thing as Burt, "you can't outrun your training" and I needed to keep my head there.

Back home from the northeast

Pretty proud of myself for not missing a run and getting a couple solid workouts in. Not proud of the way I ate and the bad weight I put on. Need to have a good last 4 weeks.
