2.5 miles this morning at 11’28” pace. Not where I was hoping to be but 2 weeks ago I couldn’t finish a mile without walking a quarter of it. Pretty hot out there today but I’m making progress. Have a 5k in September that I’d really like to come in under 30 minutes so that’s the goal there.

We all started somewhere. That’s a similar pacing to me when I started Couch to 5K this time last year. Just keep at it.

I surrendered at 22 miles.

The sun came out after a morning rain and people started dropping out left and right.

Trying not to be too hard on myself about this one. I have a new respect for the summer heat.

Where was the race? I know here it was just brutal, even starting early, and I was beat down when I finished my 20 miler this morning. Better luck next time but I know how it goes, I'm pretty much an expert DNFer

Week 8 of my 18 Week plan in the books.

Monday - 6
Tuesday - 6
Wednesday - 8
Thursday - 6
Friday - 6
Saturday - 20
Sunday - 8

Total - 60

I was aiming for about 54 after logging 50 last week but ended up running some extra miles on my off day. That also puts me at 14 straight days, so I probably need to work in a legit off day this coming week.

Awesome work. Off day well earned.

I’m about to have to figure out the answer to the age old question of how much discomfort is too much to push through. Feeling some slight tinges of discomfort in the knee I hurt a few years back. Trying to reduce mileage slightly this week and add in some extra stretching and strengthening to see how that does

First run in a sho nuff thunderstorm that blew in quicker than anticipated. Nothing to get you moving like 45 mph straight line winds, lightening, tree tops flying through the air, tree limbs cracking over head and heavy rain.

I couldn’t get my watch to cut off at the end because I was soaking wet and the touchscreen wouldn’t work or I think I would have been at about 9:20/mile over 6.25 miles. I had to duck into a shelter at 5.25 for a couple of minutes when lightening and strong wind got real bad.

I did this on Sunday too. Nice and slow on the track at the high school. Working on my form and taking it easy after 13 on Sat.

Beautiful this morning, 73F, lower humidity.....for my off day. Saturday was brutal though, 84F, 93% humidity, feels like 94 at 5 am.

On a side note, I have my fundraising page setup for my virtual NYC marathon. I didn't want to post the link here until I met my goal. Did not want anyone to feel like they have to donate. All of my donations are from work, which they will match, so I'm actually at $1k. TFK Fundraising Page

As long as you are training consistently, you will make huge progress in the first year. Enjoy it!

I definitely already notice a difference. I ran a mile Sunday just to stay moving but my legs were DEAD after my Saturday 2.5 miles. The good thing is my breathing and basically everything other than the legs felt great. I am just stretching today and gonna work tomorrow on some speed work to try to keep pushing myself.

I've been easing my way back in and just like before I get a pretty aggravating pain in the front of my knee. Runner's knee I'm thinking. Y'all got any favorite exercises for that?

Boise Marathon is flip flopping on go/cancel.

My wife wants me to just cancel and do White River and find a nice vacation spot between here (Houston) and the race for a Thanksgiving get-away.

If your goal is currently to build up a running base, then I would't even worry with speed work yet. Focus on getting to where you can run for at least 30 minutes without stopping first. Then, try at least one longer run a week (35-40 minutes). If you get bored and really want to throw in some faster running, then start with like four or five 20-30 second intervals within your 30-minute runs. You will progress more quickly that way and run less risk of injury. If your legs felt that dead on Sunday, then the day off yesterday was probably just what the doctor ordered. I bet you can do 3 miles today.

The best advice I can give you is to do some general core (planks, supermans, mountain climbers, hip thrusts) and lower body (squats, deadlifts, calf raises) strengthening and work on your form. If your core (abs, lower back, pelvic girdle, and glutes) are not activated and/or you are overstriding, then your knees and ankles are going to take more of a pounding.

Thanks for the advice. I am just using a Plan from Nike Run App but I don't know that it is the best. I will try your advice. Also, I probably used incorrect terminology by saying "speed work". I was basically gonna to run 1.5 miles with some quicker intervals mixed in.

Yeah. I assumed you were going to do a full speed workout, like a track style workout. Sounds like you are well on your way.

ultras in this weather are brutal.

i ran a 50k and june and it's the closest i've ever come to dropping. i walked in the last two miles.

don't be too hard on yourself. 22 miles in the summer heat is an accomplishment itself.
