out of curiosity on how others handled this - are the water breaks accounted for in your overall pace or do you stop your watch? either way how long is typical water break?

I usually don’t stop my watch but my water is in my hand so I can sip on the run. Only time I really ever stop my watch is to cross a street with a red light, answer my phone, or if I’m taking a break on a long run.

I stop my watch if I take a break. If the run is over 10 miles I bring a gel, and if it's about 2 hours I plan a water break. I rarely carry water with me, but if I do it's in a hydration pack and I try not to stop at all. If I'm relying on a public fountain or other known water source I'm probably stopping for 5 minutes or less.

I guess I can compare the overall time to clocked time to moving time to see the differences in paces, but I don't factor the stop time into my run pace at all.

does not accounting for the stop lead people to a false understanding of their true conditioning or perhaps let downs when they don't hit certain time goals come race day?

just for example take your 10 mile run and say you take a 5 minute unaccounted break. the overall pace changes by upwards of 30 secs or maybe worse should someone's true conditioning cause them to bonk at mile 7-8 without taking that break.

again just curious as there is no right or wrong just wanted to know what others do / think on this as I've seen some articles lately about this.

ks_nola,

I worry about that also. I get concerned that my body will begin to "expect" a break and will mentally & physically throw me off on race days.

I need to understand my body won't be given a chance to stop my HR on race day.

With it being so hot, I run with a hydration pack and when I hit a porta potty/wood I keep my watch running. I've been hitting a wall lately but just walk through it and keep my watch running.

Like you said, not right or wrong , and more preference. I have a couple neighbors who are very strong runners who take untimed water breaks and laugh & bs and actually enjoy their runs haha.

Once I start my watch I don’t stop it until my run is complete. If I plan on needing hydration I carry it with me and sip while moving. I have had to stop and refill a couple of times and I just keep the watch going.

Yeah I truly don't know. Maybe the more experienced runners on the board can speak on this issue.

I've only trained for one half and one full with the goals not necessarily dictating the long run pace. Soft goals (time frame) and hard goals (finish). I was happy with my half time, and I was happy to just finish the full though that race had difficult conditions from start to finish.

The next races of these distances I'll probably set firmer time goals but I focused more on form and pace on the long run days.

I only really take water stops during the summer. I do stop my watch. I don’t worry about it, because I know fall/winter Race will be much more manageable than the grind of a summer training run.

Well, I'm sidelined at least a week or two. Pinched my sciatic according to my virtual doctor. Anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxers are on the way.

She says two weeks without running. I will probably ignore that order after a few days of pills and laying on the couch.

I feel fortunate to have been running/racing for 4 years now without any real injury so I'm trying to use this as a break and get healthy all around.

This is what I do. My Saturday run group is full of serious runners. They stop every 3-4 miles for hydration. I don't time these.

On my own runs during the week, I've been incorporating and untimed water break during these. I run 6 miles and usually taking a walking water break at mile 3 or 4. With the hills, heat, and humidity around Birmingham, I'm not sure how you could do it any other way. My goal is to stay healthy until this Fall and hopefully get back to racing.

I rarely stop for water, but stop my watch when I do. Like this past Saturday, I stopped in a nearby neighborhood water fountain at mile 10 and had a sip. I'm talking maybe 30 seconds max. Therefore, the effect on pace is negligible if any. Not sure why I even stop the watch..? If I break for 5 minutes something went wrong and/or there is no restarting after that.

During a Summer speed/interval session I will drink water/electrolytes during my recovery period between reps. I'll keep the watch running for that.

Marine Corps Marathon is canceled but I have already registered a back-up on same day in Boise, ID.

If that gets cut out also, I'll keep my training as planned, turn marathon day into training day, build in some rest ,and reset for Woodlands 2021.

1999,

They actually offered a full refund, up to a 3 year deferment, or pay extra 45 bucks for a virtual.

I don’t hydrate during unless I’m going about 14+. Try not to stop as much as possible.

1999,

Very fair in my opinion. They stressed they are The People's Marathon and wanted to reward people that signed up and were committed to coming if allowed.

I’ve fallen off the rails a bit over the past couple of weeks. I somehow bruised the top of my foot pretty bad last week. I’m a bit worried that it might be a metatarsal stress fracture, but it could just have been a rock that hit my foot while mowing. That combined with some Achilles tendinitis has sapped some of my motivation in addition to several mornings where thunderstorms kept me from running. I’ve been eating like crap too. The stress at work hasn’t helped me has contributed to poor sleep. Bottom line, I’m in a bit of a funk. If I get out the door in the morning I can get back on track.

Damn. I got fat. Amazing how quickly it happens.

I was in some of my best shape in a long time in April/May. Then it got too hot to take my youngest in the stroller and I completely fell off.

My diet went to crap. I started halfheartedly lifting again, but I haven’t been consistent with all the restrictions and whatnot.

Just went for 3.5 mile and I felt every inch of those 3.5 miles.

Time to get back at it. Going to cut out alcohol and sweets till Labor Day and get back to the miles.

I felt really good back in April. Let’s get there again.
