Busted out the BOB and took the baby for a 5 mile run this morning. Nice and slow and she did great. “Sang” most of the way.
When my kids were little I used to take them out in the jogging stroller and hand them a few picture books to check out on the ride. They usually ended up falling asleep by mile 2.

This is why I go at 4 am. Unless I'm going beyond 16 miles, I always get back before the kids are up. I've just adjusted my sleep to accommodate.
Same kballa. I get crazy looks all the time but it's the only way I've found to get my running fix and not feel guilty about sacrificing family time.

Got a five mile threshold run in which was my first real workout since the marathon. It was aight. Marathon racing destroys your body, man. Kind of puts the perspective in why elites only run a couple a year.

Got in a great 40 minute “long” run today, staying with my plan of bumping up 5 mins a week. HR stayed <155 for the most part and really felt like I am in decent shape. Confidence boost if nothing else. Especially being it was only my 2nd day to run this week (cycled another 2 days).
It was my kinda morning to be running. Chill in the air, kinda nasty so no one is really out and about except me. My perfect type of morning to run.

What was your pacing for that 155? I’d have to do a 12:00 mile or less the stay below that.

Ended up around 9:30. Pre stroke I’d have been about a minute faster at least at that HR. Ah well.

Well, let’s try yet again.
Got in 6 today. First run over 2 miles in over a month. Longest in about 3 months.

Awesome Brah! Getting the band back together...

Did some intervals for the first time today in about 6-8 weeks. Wow have I lost some fitness. Struggled with them but my hamstring held up well so I guess I’m good to start pushing it again.

Yeah. I gotta figure how I can get my mile/minute better at the lower heart rate.
I did 8/400 intervals this week with the HRM. First 400 was at a 7:30 pace which is good for me and heart rate of 164. All the subsequent intervals were at an 8ish pace with the heart rate climbing each time culminating with a final interval of 182. Am I to assume that continuing interval training will improve this performance?

You really shouldn’t be worrying about your heart rate during intervals. If you choose to worry about your heart rate, it should be for tempos or recovery. This is assuming that you are using a strap.
Man, I don’t really know how to type that without coming off bitchy. Anyhow I’m not trying get all preachy just passing on some unwanted internet advice.

I don’t really pay a whole lot of attention to my heart rate other than using it as an indicator that I may be working too hard. It seems my heart rate always get really elevated. I do think your body will acclimate as you continue progressing. I don’t have th knowledge to explain the science behind how the body does this though.
From a performance perspective though I went back to strava and looked at a few of my runs from 2019. In March I ran a PR 10K which absolutely exhausted me. Last week I was able to hold the pace from that 10K for my half with a 10 mile head wind the entire race. My heart rate elevated to the same level as the 10K. Obviously my body has adapted but I can’t explain it
When I run intervals I’m more focused on trying to hit a pace and hold it for a distance as opposed to watching my heart rate.

I got the Polar H7 and wear it every time I do anything. Not exactly sure what the data means, but I’m capturing it.
Trying to get ready for the 15K in April. Ran the course yesterday and managed a 9:30 pace. Not upset with it given that I had to stop multiple times at crosswalks and to make sure I was on the right course. It has right at 800ft of elevation change including the biggest hill at mile 6 (280ft over a half mile).

I'm supposed to run my third of the year on Saturday. Then I'm taking a break from the marathon distance. I don't plan on running another one until sometime next fall/winter.

Not running sucks ...I've realized how much I enjoy it & how it positively impacts your health..
PSA --> if you aren't injured, or recovering from a stroke, run& reap the benefits

Not too much longer and you should be out of the cast. Once you come out of the cast it should open some opportunities for aerobic activity like biking. Another thing you could discuss is potential of using an antigravity treadmill.

gsadle5,
1/10 out the cast then 1-2 weeks in boot....this isnt helping my weight loss haha
My ortho is a BRM/Hogbody level runner who runs well under 3 hours @ 50 years old+ so he gets it ...he was conservative talking about next few months and explained the pitfalls of trying too much too soon and how it can hurt / create very bad biomechanical issues due to the atrophy and stride favoring one side ...
Thankfully I can afford anti gravity stuff and there are other conservative aerobic activities...I'm lucky it was only minimally displaced , not a Jones fracture, no tendon damage , and no surgery.
He had a good point --> I'm so new (14+ months of running), I'm sort of "starting over" if it goes till March/April so I can restart and eliminate previous mistakes related to form, diet, training schedule, and effort. I'm a positive guy so it's like a "second chance" to become a runner and balance the loss of time & miles with better quality work.
It just sucks and is boring as hell since my client won't allow crutches in their building..daytime tv, overstudying for professional exams, and watching my wife gloat about how awesome her HIIT workouts are haha...

Being a new runner myself, I’m curious about this. Care to expound on that?

Aubie,
I started with no cardio/aerobic base-->
Big picture, I had no clue, never ran other than high school sports practice.
form: noticed in race pictures I was dragging my feet & shuffling vs. running with a stride & noticed on my shoe soles also. Made a effort to stride and drive and it really helped
diet: I was so inconsistent when I had to run in the afternoon. I'd mis-time meals and feel sluggish and heavy which slowed my midweek training runs down vs early morning
training schedule: chose a plan without enough miles , days, or long runs. I just didnt know I needed more.
effort: I didn't push myself because I didnt believe I could run harder and faster...one day I said screw it and realized how much faster I could train.

You don't come across as bitchy or preachy. I like sharing info here and seeing what others have to offer. I imagine that's what most of us come here for. I probably share more advice than people are looking for, but they can choose not consider it if they want.
