I question my choices every time I do so. If not for trying to "stick to the plan", I definitely wouldn't do as much. I have thoughts like "WTF are you trying to prove, you're a 38 year old never been out here on a damn High School track in the middle of a Summer day panting like a dog. For what exactly?" Then I finish and I feel like an 18 year old stallion!

Heat advisory on the Northshore today until 8:00 PM. Heat index of 113 degress plus. That's too hot to even check the mail.

on the running outside vs. inside note, during my HIIT training today i had 3x30 second sprints on those curvy sprint thingys (not a treadmill.)

A) topped out at 23 mph
B) those things are scary as hell and i felt like i was going to launch myself off of it.

i've avoided treadmills all summer while still keeping up pretty decent but not great mileage. i keep telling myself it will all be over soon. I'll cap out 1k miles before the end of October which is gravy.

Just got 4 easy in at 112 heat index. Was in the threshold zone by mile 2. Nothing is coming easy. Just got out the shower & still pouring sweat. Think the run probably did more harm than good. Speed work tomorrow will be treadmill, no doubt about it.

Can’t believe I am planning on racing a 5K next weekend. Borders on insanity.

TigeRoots,

"Nothing is coming easy" -->

That is what has been motivating me all summer & allowing me to not excessively stress about my paces.

Days like today & 100+ "normal" Houston days make me struggle EVERY step, which I need mentally. Tough runs are necessary for my confidence at this point. I only find solace knowing my half PR attempt and 1st marathon will probably be 50 degrees cooler than these training runs.

Stepping out the door is like a right hook to my jaw every day , which I need to get better.

The fact that I safely did 7 today under these conditions is giving me a bit of confidence.

Ventured out on my first trail run today looking for shade and a slight break from the afternoon sun. It was still hot as balls, but nice scenery and very little direct sunlight. The terrain and elevation was tough on my legs compared to what I’m used to, but overall I enjoyed it. I definitely plan to incorporate this more into my running plan in the future.

those curvy sprint thingys

I almost killed myself on one.

This morning:
45 minutes core
40 side-to-side box jumps x20
1 mile run tempo.

seemed good enough for today.

Absolutely crushed a Threshold/Rep workout today mid day, nonetheless. Was getting in my truck to go hit the treadmill and saw some cloud cover and “only 100 feels like”, so against my better judgement I hit the pavement. Extreme confidence building workout for me, considering the circumstances and recent workouts in the heat. Figured I’d be positive for once, as I do enough bitching during the Summer.

2 WU
3 X 1 @ 6:52, 6:43, 6:39/1:00 Rest
4 X 200 @ 6:02, 5:38, 6:10, 5:54/200 Rest
2 CD

No added rest, water, etc.

6 miles this am. It was a nice hot balmy thick soup in the air morning. As soon as you step outside you get a good gut punch. After mile 4 you think, "should I just wait until it gets cooler to be doing this?" But after finishing you start thinking about the next run workout.

Why are we like this?

Conquering a tough run before work is awesome. Really makes the rest of my day.

Man running is hard.

Been consistently under 7:30 on my one mile runs. It really beats me up to go much over 1 mile.

Tried a brewery 5k yesterday (first 5k I finished since....2011, at least) and came in at 31 minutes. That was with 3 walking breaks of about 2 minutes each. Was hoping for under 30, but I just was not feeling it. I did a heavy leg day the day before the run, so maybe that limited me a bit. My right calf tightened up something fierce at about two miles and I was on the struggle bus after that. Oh well, still not bad for me!
