Cursed myself. Stopped for 10 or so seconds in the shade 4 miles into a 6 miler, just to get my HR down in 102 feels like direct sunlight. Didn’t really work.

I find myself walking more and more as it gets 100+....TigeRoots is right, it does not really help my heart rate but a few seconds feels like a reprieve.

In the end, my extra weight, lack of fitness , and poor running form is being exposed but it gives me micro goals to work on.

Sorry I didn’t come back to this. I was driving up from the Rio Grande Valley today.

I did 3 runs down there. One in 99 degrees and 87% humidity in Mission on trails. I took a bottle of ice water and it was completely melted in less than a mile. It was hot by mile 3. That one I actually felt myself overheating and had to stop just to not die.

Yesterday afternoon I did trails in Brownsville and it was a bit hotter but I was in shade the most of the time and faired better but still had to walk some. I just took ice with no water and it faired a bit better.

This morning I went at 5:45 and it was about 80 with 100% humidity and I was soaked in less than a mile and my car seat still hasn’t dried out 8 hours later. I only had to walk because I sprinted (or as I like to call it, did a slow Burt jog) a few segments.

Maybe I’ve been shielding myself from really hot runs but it killed me this week. South Texas is just brutally hot.

3.0 in 25:12 yesterday in scorching South Mississippi heat.

Felt like I was crawling out there but apparently I wasn’t.

Thankful for a couple days off before I run four miles on Saturday.

I may start running in the morning. It’s just too hot in the afternoon. However, it’s hot in the morning too, and especially humid.

Morning, particularly before 7:00, is so much cooler than any other time of day. It's still tremendously hot in late evening, even after the sun goes down from the heat radiating off the concrete.

Thinking I need to start waking up around 3:00 to run before work at least a day or 2 a week, but then I sacrifice sleep sooo....

Alarm set for 3:00 this am, threw on the Ranger panties and headed out for an easy 6. Doing what I can to beat the direct sunlight. Still humid but felt great, comparatively speaking.

Do any of you pay attention to GAP on Strava? I usually don't as it's usually pretty close to my regular pace, but I see some discrepancy from this am. Not sure what to make of it because it's not like I ran on any real elevation at all.

Damn.

When I was working in Falfurrias for 6 months, I ran pretty routinely around the town.

Then they started having some small drug wars or something where they had like 10 drive-bys in a week.

I was running one evening and was stopped by a cop and he just straight up told me that I shouldn't be running on the roads.

So glad that project is over

this is my current problem is that I would have to wake up at 3:30 am to get a good run in before work and I just can't do that consistently

I've tried numerous times and will do good for like 2 weeks but then eventually fall off

I hear ya. When I’m on shift work I get up at 2:15, so 3:00 is actually sleeping “late” now that I’m on straight days.

valley is an interesting place. McAllen, Sharyland, and Mission aren't overly "friendly" but they're safe and there's a lot of wealth. i'll put average luxury car running around downtown McAllen over Austin/DFW/etc.

But then the lows there are really really really low. Everything from Pharr to Harlingen felt like it skipped the latter part of the 20th century. But, some of my favorite customers and people i know are hispanics working in that region. just a kind and welcoming people. the edges of the Valleyplex like Alice, Falfurrias, Rio Grande City, or La Joya, i would never go for a run in if my life depended on it. It's the only time in my life i felt unsafe for being white.

I wake up around 4am most days to beat the heat. It’s worth it. I’d suggest scheduling a race to help with waking up. It will really give you the motivation to wake up and get out there.

8th 70 plus mile week since the beginning of May. Been on three weeks with doubles and one week down with 2 bike rides on the two rest days otherwise one bike on Mondays. Holding up pretty good for an old man. Just gotta make it through this summer and whip that llama's arse this fall. Had a sub 5 "miracle mile" (what I call that stretch) with a very generous grade, otherwise I've been keeping my speed work short with 200-400 repeats hoping to learn how to be faster for shorter miles until my marathon training kicks in this September. I'm in what I'd consider junior year cross country shape right now which is stupid. However, with the heat, I'll be slowing down the pace a lot. Trying to maintain spring training pace in summer is irresponsible; effort not time baws.

Nice work Brah!

Definitely hear you on effort vs time/pace this time of the year. Trying to come to grips with that likelihood that I won’t hit many of the speed work paces on this plan I started today. Oh well, not gonna push it to the point of hurting myself or stroking out.
