Yeah, they are. Still think I prefer the red OG’s (couldn’t find my size) and I like the blue also. Really all of them are pretty damn sharp. These things are light! Did some sprints in the driveway and liking what I feel so far. Gonna get a half mile at a fast pace in them tomorrow after my long run.

Some friends are running “The Game” outside Austin today. You have an hour to run a 4.1 trail loop. End of the hour and they start another loop. If you’re not back or don’t drop a token you pick up from the far side of the loop before you start, you’re out. Sounds miserable

I’ve done one of these “last man standing” races before. It was a 3.4 mile loop and I made it 11 hours before I quit.

Checking in. Ran my first 50k and my first trail race this am. My GPS messed up in the woods and weather, but from others looked to be close to 30.5 miles, 3.5k feet gain.

It was more like a slog or swim at times. We were under flash flood warning and it rained all day. Course is rocky anyway but got harder to run with all the rain.

I really had no idea what I was doing pace or nutrition-wise. Mistakes were definitely made - had to make several emergency pit stops off trail . I took it real slow in the beginning - walked a good many hills (or “power hiked” as our man 3NO likes to say). It was good advice, and I was able to reel in a uite a few people after the halfway turn.

Anyway, long recap but finished in 6:48, which was good for 19 out of I’m guessing maybe 100 (180 started 50 mile and 50k combined). They’ll release the results when they get around to it. Trail racing is a different world, for sure. I enjoyed it despite shitty weather. Thinking hard about trying to build a big base over the next few months and running another in late summer, see how that goes.

It is a whole different ball game. I’m not built for land speed over a long time, but I can endure a lot of up and down and that’s why I gravitate towards it. You can go for the overall speed of it but the endurance of crawling, climbing and jumping 10+ miles on a trail is just a beast.

I ran a 10+ pace today on trails but it was still a fun, great run with a lot of effort in the rain.

ETA: glad you enjoyed it! It’s addicting AF.

Vintage Park Half Recap -->

Signed up as a training run to gauge my pace for a race 5 weeks from now.

Ended up @ 1:56:45 ( Garmin & Strava ) which was 14 minutes faster than my previous PR 6 weeks ago and beat my 2019 goal.

Felt so smooth with the pacer that I actually felt slow , never had any energy issues, and could have left the group if I had more confidence around mile 9.

Best advice I got here that helped was increasing weekly miles , run long runs easier , and introduce speed workouts.

I'm 100% healthy , enjoyed every mile, and will get back out there to start over.

Thanks to you all.

Saw that. Congratulations!

So now that you've broken your 2019 goal what's your new 2019 goal? Time? Mileage? New race distance time?

It's fun to see so many goals achieved this early in the year.

BRM,

I upped my mileage goals last month to 1500 so that will be a good week to week grind.

I have my first full on 1/20/20 so I'll keep that as my next distance jump.

It looks like I can continue to do what worked ( base HR runs @155 , speed, tempo , hills ) until that training starts in August.

Time wise, I am running the Houston half in October and I'll pick a reasonable PR attempt based on my fitness level. My 11 minute PRs are done, that was just due to being a fat beginner.

Weight wise, I was 184 today and need to be around 169 - 175 in January.

I’m 4 weeks out from my first full Ironman. Just did 17.5 miles at a 7:30 pace, with 5x 1mile @ 6:45 built in. Feeling pretty good considering I did 100miles on the bike and a 4 mile run yesterday.

Burt you’re killing it on mileage.

I keep throwing up 30-40 and you’re just murdering it.

Speaking of murdering. I’m about to kill my dogs. I’ve finally trained them to run off my left hip and they do great but today I could barely get those a-holes to pace a 9:00 mile. They were both acting like it was an afternoon stroll.

Thanks man. 766 total this year so far.

Starting next week, I'm going to start supplementing my miles with 3 extra 30-40 minute runs. That'll start putting me in the 70s on non race weeks and eventually I'll build up to 9 runs a week into the 80-90 range.

I'm not fricking around for this coming November. Get in, get Boston, never do another marathon again after NYC and Boston and concentrate on the 13.1.

You left out the part where we get to keep all our money too.

I kid.

No it’s fair.

I want to say it’s just an excuse and there are ton of people that have kids and do 50+ miles a week. Sure some of them are sponsored athletes, but I need to up my game.

I’m really trying to make 5 mile runs my shortest runs. As soon as my kids’s Sports are over in the spring my Saturday runs are going to start being 10-20+

Got in my 18 today. Actually felt like I had a lot left in the tank (granted it wasn’t at a fast pace per se)

I am somewhat hopeful maybe I can knock out Boston and New York in 2020. That would mean I had completed all of the US portion of the Marathon Majors
