Minimalist shoes for foot pain

Started having some foot pain about a year ago. Feels like a bruised heel and some pressure by my pinky toe. I use hokas for running and they are great, and I have a pair of new balance crosss trainers for all day wear. My feet mostly hurt when I am in the new balance all day. I have started to realize that when I am barefoot my feet don’t really hurt. I am beginning to believe that the extra cushion is causing my pain. Was thinking about trying a pair of the NB minimus shoes or Reebok nanos. Anyone have any experience with this?
I would still wear the hokas running as my feet feel fine after a run.

Look for Athlean x foot pain on youtube. It could be helpful in your situation.

I've worn primarily minimalist shoes since 2011, and I really have trouble wearing anything else.
Xero makes the best minimalist shoes today, and has options for pretty much all occasions.
Altra is a good option for running, giving plenty of cushion while keeping very flat.
Vans are actually really good, super flat with plenty of toe room and very flexible.
Lots of people like Merrell's options, but their last forces my foot into an arch pattern that just doesn't work for me.

Flat and wide toe box is the way to go. I wear Nike AF1s, because that’s what I have right now. I ordered a pair of Bearfoot shoes for lifting. At some point, I’m probably going to look into Vans or something of the sort.

I've used vibrams since 2006 or 2007. They are amazing for foot troubles.

I had similar problems a few years ago. I'm now on my third pair of NB minimus shoes. They have worked wonders for my feet. I know some people who tried them and hated them. Your feet will let you know quickly. Make sure you get the ones with the Vibram soles. It seems like some of the newer ones have a different sole.

I’m a huge fan of Altra’s and any minimalist shoe.
I will say it takes a transition though, do not just jump into it and start running in minimalist shoes. Your Achilles has to adjust to the zero drop and stretch out, otherwise you will develop heel issues. You also have to correct your stride and make sure your forefoot striking with a minimalist shoe. Do not heel strike in these.

Yeah. Jumped into my Altras too quick and I’m dealing with plantar fasciitis right now. Doing a lot of stretches and calf raises. Got in 4 miles today with minimal pain so I’ll keep it up.

So you’re supposed to ease into it. Not that I’m an expert, but when you’re transitioning from shoes with arch support to minimalist shoes, you need to give your feet time to adjust to operating without the support. Your feet sort of rebuild the arches in the feet. If you jump in too fast, it can cause pain. That’s what I got from Aaron Horsching. I like to think he knows what he’s talking about.

But yea it’s a good idea to ease into them if you’re not used to it

Google the minimalist index. They have a ton of info including ratings for different shoes. Some people progress the index slowly via different pairs of shoes. Some people go straight to significant minimalism and just ease in to it.

I know this guide is for barefoot stuff and not minimalist, but there's some guides there to helping make the transition if it is needed.

Thanks for this. Plantar really killed me yesterday after I sat down for a while. Looks like I have a bunch of calf raises in my future.

Well, a month of calf raises and I’m getting there. Plantar fasciitis has been very slow to go away.

Merrell Trail Glove 5's are nice. They're about as close as you can get to going barefoot. Don't get the 6's though, they're garbage.

Which mainstream looking show still hast he least heel drop? I notice that Brooks doesn't make the super low drop anymore, which is a bummer. Mine are on their last legs.

The lowest drop you can get before a zero drop is 4mm. Brooks makes a pair with that and Saucony does too.

I got the Saucony bullet. Not sure what the official drop is, but it ain’t much. I even take the inner sole out, so it’s very “barefoot”.
