MRI finally came back. Medical meniscus tear, postanterior horn. Military medical system is slow and not doing a lot of favors. Looking to try and convince them to do PRP, and just do pool work for 3 months or so. Trying to avoid surgery at 33 years old. Anyone with experience dealing with this type of injury?

At 33 and I’m assuming you are active you looking at getting a repair probably instead of a menisectomy. Do some PT and see if that helps but I doubt it.

Repair means a longer recovery!

Just get it cleaned up with a scope and roll on. 4-6 week recovery isn’t bad.

Thanks for the feedback. Ya’ll make it sound like the scope isn’t too bad; from the military folks I talk to they keep telling me to avoid it as much as I can and try rehab/pool therapy first. PRP was an experimental option, but I hear a lot of athletes are using it. Anyone heard anything about PRP?

Had a lateral tear scoped 9 years ago and was biking at the physical therapists office 2 days later like nothing happened .

Nothing to it .
Very easy and have had no issues since

Are you saying you tore both your anterior and posterior horn of your medial meniscus?

I’ve had both knees scoped for the same thing. Not bad at all. One was worse than the other, but still only a few weeks downtime.

Now I’m dealing with an ACL tear. A bit more than a few weeks recovery.

Following this thread.

I have a mensicus tear that I've been trying to rehab for the last year and a half with PT. It's somewhat better but still gives me issues.

I was leary of surgery as I didn't like the idea of removing part of my meniscus. I'm starting to consider surgery since it is still giving me issues.

Do you have to go to the VA to have the surgery? If so I would avoid that at all costs.

It would be a military hospital. Specifically, Tripler on Hawaii.

In regards to PRP it’s up in the air. Some studies you read are either for it or show minimal gains. Our ortho mds used to use it on everything a few years ago and they stopped. They didn’t see a huge benefit from it.

Now I know a lot of Pro teams use it for their players when trying to help with recovery. But I’m not sure if it’s the PRP that’s effective or the training staff that makes more of a difference.

THAT is very good information. Thank you. I had also heard some interesting things about aqua therapy. I.e. strictly swimming and aqua jogging to turn the tear into almost a callous, vice exacerbating the tear. I recently went strictly pool; will see how it goes

Good info.

Have you had any experience with stem cells injections in knees for meniscus tears?

Mine was so painful I could barely walk for a month. Then took a year + off running. With PT and lots of swimming and strength training, I got back on my feet and ran a marathon, multiple half marathons, and steep trail races, and I'm training for 100 miler. I'm 11 years older than you are.

Try PT first.

In Lithuania or someplace they can get away with such things, they did a study w a placebo meniscus study, supposedly pretty well controlled and double-blind. The placebo was actually slightly more effective than the real surgery. I don't put a lot of faith in that test but it's always on my mind when I think about surgery.

Please tell me about your recovery routine, specifically what you did earlier in the process and when you started incorporating “strength” training. Do you mean weights?

Just have the surgery and move on, not a big deal unless you already have some significant osteoarthritis

I didn't do a lot of weights really. Mostly the exercises my PT gave me. They're on gifs he set up on my account. I haven't logged into it in about a year. Let me look and summarize.

I think my break from running helped and when I started back I started very slowly and worked up to distance and paid attention to form and shoes etc.

My current running tweak is posterior tibialis tendinitis. Runners ankle. I have it under control through PT. One day I'll learn the cardinal rule of all fitness: don't get hurt.

Just to toss in another random meniscus story, I tore mine my sophomore year in college and waited too long to get it looked at. When summer started I finally got it checked out and the only option was partial menisectomy. That was 16 years ago and still doesn't feel great. Strength is fine, but stability sucks and flexibility is even worse.

I almost hate to post it but I’ve torn my twice. 1st time had surgery lost feeling in upper shin area from scope, a professional sports team doctor did my procedure. Re tore same meniscus, did acupuncture, took 6 months going 1x week but not only did meniscus heal the feeling return in my leg.
