I absolutely hate going to a gym, but I need to exercise and its too hot to run outside. Thinking about trying a home workout routine but I'm unsure where to start. Would calisthenics be my best option? Goal would be to exercise and gain strength.

Yes, calisthenics is the way to go, brotha.

Pullup bar, resistance bands, dip stand, and a good mat. Won't take up much room and it will get the job done.

Great videos on YouTube. CalisthenicsMovement is pretty legit.

You could probably look into a TRX system.

Get a kettle bell. There are tons of effective exercises like swings, presses, squats, cleans, lunges etc

Burpees
Air squats
Lunges
Push-ups
Sit ups
Planks

There's a ton more but you can get a serious burn

Wall or ceiling mounted chin bar and a set of gymnastic rings is all you need.

R/bodyweightfitness has good routines. So does building the gymnastics body once you are more advanced

Sandbag, pullup bar, gymnastic rings. There's a ton of upper body programs using bodyweight. Working legs doing strictly bodyweight is more difficult. Thats why I recommend adding sandbags. You can get most of the benefits of pushing iron, and in some ways they're more versatile. Also safer for workimg out alone. A sandbag wont break your foot if you drop it.
