So my doctor has started me on Lipitor. I’m only 36 but have battled high cholesterol for a while now. Unfortunately, a restricted diet, taking supplements and etc didn’t lower it. I’ve heard numerous people over the years complain about muscle pain as a side effect. I’m just curious to see if anyone here can speak to that; what are your experiences with it or similar drugs?

The muscle aches generally go away in time. Only very rarely are the drug reactions severe enough to medically warrant stopping the statin (rhabdo and significant liver enzyme elevation).

It's a great medication well tolerated by most, and has benefits beyond just lowering cholesterol.

The only proven side effects are dementia, diabetes, cataracts, prostate cancer, depression, anxiety, and yes leg pain. Also many studies show no reduce in mortality rate. FYI statins are the #1 prescribed medication, and 29 billion dollars worth of statins are sold every year.

What was your hdl and ldl?

Your MD gets reimbursed at a higher rate for your cholesterol score. Go read The Big Fat Lie. There is nothing wrong with you or your cholesterol. Statims "reduce CV risk by 20%", which isn't actually accurate, but they do have a 4 fold increase of your heart stopping as a pump (CHF). You are 36, you do not need this med. Ask your MD for a calcium score or particle size on your cholesterol panel- I imagine he/she will not know how to order either of these. Do your research and throw that shite away.

Lipitor is a drug I’d avoid at all costs. Have you tried high dose Niacin? It can raise your HDL by 30% in high enough doses.

I'm not sure why I even bothered with a decade of undergrad, med school and residency. I could have saved a ton of time and money just googling shite.

The overwhelming majority of people tolerate them without any of these complications, and all the complications are dose dependent. Unless you have known cardiovascular disease, you are not likely to be on the highest doses. At the standard 10-20 mg of Lipitor side effects beyond transient muscle pain are very, very uncommon, and those who need higher doses have such a dramatic statistical benefit it far outweighs the risk.

Unless the OP has diabetes, it is likely his LDL was >190 and that was the indication for starting the statin. Depending on who you have the debate with, some recommend 35 and some 40 as the age for statin initiation if you meet the indications.

All-cause mortality

The cardiovascular mortality reduction is undeniable and one of the most well established premises in all of medicine.

You should discuss with your doctor to see if for an adjustment period.. skip every other day while taking the Lipitor to ease up on the muscle pain.. we have several patients that have done this and they are pleased with the results

Ugh. Doctors are so far behind on cardiovascular science it's frightening.

Did your doctor do a full LDL-P panel? What is your restricted diet?

Our hearts might agree with you there. What's your research background re CVD? If you are all in on statins then I wish you'd have saved your money.

I take it started it about 3 weeks now. No side effects at all. I exercise on a regular basis and watch what I eat, but unfortunately my body produces too much. As my Dr. says, I could eat just bread and water and my levels would be to high, so I take it.

I wouldn't do anything for cholesterol unless I had an LDL-P test. It's ridiculous that we KNOW now that traditional tests are bullshite; you can have low cholesterol and a risky LDL-P test, or high cholesterol and a sold test. We are medicating based on outdated testing.

I took Lipitor for years until I decided to get in better shape and lose some weight. Got my cholesterol under control and have been off of it, by doctor's orders, for about 3 years now.

Multiple people in this thread are acting like doctors are clueless on this.

EVERY board certified IMED and CV physician who trained in the last decade is fully aware of LDL-profiles, coronary calcium scores, etc. These tests do have some functional utility in the right patient populations. The problem is they generally aren't covered by insurances or Medicare and are cost prohibitive to most patient demographics.

The tests aren't perfect end all be all studi e however. Coronary calcium scoring didn't tell us who has the unstable plaques that are the most common cause of sudden cardiac death for instance.

I agree they work at lowering Cholesterol, but is the problem. You probably already know this, but there is a growing shift in thought within the cardiovascular medical field on how important "low" cholesterol really is in prevent heart attacks/heart disease. Once thought anything over 200 was unacceptable........ now not so much of a concern if all the other boxes are checked good.

I am 47 with total cholesterol of 265 and my doctor said while he would prefer the number lower it wasn't a concern to him because of my overall cardiovascular health was excellent. We did the Boston Heart Test and I have zero inflammation and beside the cholesterol number there were no red flags. I have had elevated cholesterol since the first time I had it checked in my 20's and they wanted me to get on medicine back then. Never did and no issues. I eat healthy, exercise, don't use tobacco, etc. but my body just likes high cholesterol.

It appears someone finally smart enough decided to find out why all these people with low cholesterol have heart attacks or heart disease. While I know cholesterol plays a part in cardiovascular issues, it's not as simple as getting it lowered and all is good. A lot more to look at.

No offense Doc, but I am against taking any meds unless it's necessary.... unfortunately the medical community (not accusing you) in general has taken the stance of throwing pills at people just because the "complain" about something. Medicine is about just what it's name is says.... "Medicine". It should be about wellness, finding the root cause and fixing that instead of just treating a symptom. You may be one of the good ones, however some people just like you that went to all those years of med school are not don't do the right thing or have the correct intentions. I am sure you can agree with that.
