Drop =\= throw

I’m dropping them on certain exercises albeit not from very high off the ground.

You drop weights at some gyms and the owners will make that decision for you.

No you absolutely shouldn’t.

I would use this as evidence you don’t know what you’re doing. But you already admitted you drop your weights every set, so I already knew that.

The good news is, I can tell you can’t lift very heavy weights, so they’re probably not too loud when you drop them.

what do you mean by dropping...i mean for Olympic lifting...you should be dropping. deadlifts are going to be loud if you are lifting heavy even if not dropping from the top and if you are working concentric only or if you are doing a dumbbell bench, if you are doing heavy enough....unless you want to risk injury, you are going to drop them from a foot away

like im confused, when are people throwing weights?

Sure, as I said a bit back, dropping a heavy deadlift with bumper plates (which actually -are- designed for that) is fine, imo. Some gyms still don't let you do that, but that's a bit silly - that's an actual safety issue.

It's when somebody is dumbbell benching and at the end of every set they just throw the weights off to the side.

And no, you don't have to drop dumbbells even on heavy sets. If flat bench, just twist them to neutral grip and rest them on your lower chest/stomach and sit up. Again, I'd argue if you can't handle that movement you probably shouldn't be handling those weights. But even if you insist on benching more than you need, you can still manage to lower the DB's one at a time to your side with enough control that they don't bounce violently off the floor. Heaven forbid, you could also get a spotter.

It's especially worse when somebody does it on incline cause you're basically already sitting up, absolutely no reason you can't bring those weights to your thighs with ease, but I still see that all the time too.

Look I understand that if you're lifting real weights, 120's, 130's+, it's tough to sit up after a set and there's gonna be a thump when bailing those off to the side. But that's really not what we're talking about. We're talking about guys incline pressing 60, 70 lbs and dumping them from shoulder height after a 10-12 rep set. It's just not necessary in any way shape or form, and it's disrespectful.

ok yea in total agreement. I was thinking....man this dude is expecting a lot after a heavy set of 3-4 DBs where a guy drops them from like 4-6" above the ground because he couldnt sit up with them lol

what you said is more than fair.

and please excuse my ignorance, i havent been in a commercial gym more than half a dozen times in the last decade. so i am 100% talking out of ignorance as i dont have the experience with commercial gyms anymore.

This is pretty much what annoys the frick out of most people when they see and hear this. I don't think anybody other than gym Karen's care a ton about dropping a deadlift of any considerable weight. Plus you aren't going to damage equipment other than a floor on deadlifts and that shite should be done in a rack anyway. You drop db's, especially from doing incline chest or shoulders, and you are going to start damaging them after a while. If you can't bring db's down softly without dropping, learn how to lift correctly or lighten the weight.

not sure which gym you train at but both the large dumbbells, and flooring, at most modern gyms seem to be constructed with the idea that people will be dropping them from bench height… and I just dont see how there would be any damage to the weights or the floors from doing so. Heavy rubber hitting heavy rubber seems pretty ok to me

People on their phones for an extended amount of time while “using” a machine or the equipment

This is aggravating

Are you saying deadlifts should be done in a rack?
Seriously?

Are you referring to rack pulls?

It warps the handles, because the kinetic energy has to go somewhere.

Hell yes. People playing on their freaking phones sitting on a machine you're waiting for.

While annoying broccoli head behavior, what trumps it is probably mega circuits pushed by trainers, where you won't see anyone for 6-7 minutes at a station (pullups in the squat rack, etc.) and then they show back up acting like you're the problem.

Well they can be done anywhere you want to put a bar, so no, not exclusively. Guess we need to define a rack. The racks at my gym have an extended floor so when I do let gravity win that doesn't sound so bad as dumping db's from an incline press. They also have all the plates I need so I don't have carry them all over the gym because I powerlift and will get up to 600 and that's a lot of fricking plates.

Hope that clarifies things.

I inconvenience myself and go to the gym at 8pm just to avoid people and all their bullshite. It puts me back home later than I'd like but I enjoy my time a lot more.
