I have to go to a podiatrist and get an ingrown toenail worked on. I can't get out of my mind how painful this might be. I know they use a local anesthesia but I'm still thinking I'm not going to get out of this without trying to jump of the table. Any of you out there who've had this and can assuage my fear?

I’ve removed a few in our office. The more infected it is, the more it hurts due to the anesthesia not being as effective.

Had 2 cut out back when I was in highschool. Worst part was the anesthesia shot. Didn't feel anything after that.

The worst part is the shots. After that, all you will feel is pressure.

I had both of mine cut out in HS. One was really infected because I hid it from my parents for a long time for some reason.

My mom finally said something when she noticed all of my socks had blood stains on them.

My worst one was at basic training... no shot, no nothing. Damn MAJ walks in and says "ingrown toenail huh?" Then proceeded push a wedge thing to the back and pull out the toenail.

I used to get ingrown toenails as a kid. My cousins would hold me down as my uncle cut them out. That's probably not the route you should go.

Not bad at all. I had tons removed when I was still running. Like everyone else said, the shot is the worst part. My podiatrist used to use a cold spray before he put the needle in so I wouldn't even feel that. It's possible it'll throb a little bit during recovery, but just keep soaking it in warm epsom salt baths.

Doesn’t hurt at all. I didn’t even find the shots painful.

Playing soccer caused me to have surgery on each of my big toes and little toes in high-school. The little toes hurt more than the other.

When I was in high school I had one that got infected on my big toe. Well, I kept picking at it which led to me messing with the other side of that nail and ended up with a double ingrown toenail infection. Dr. had to cut out both sides. He ended up scraping the nail bed on both sides. Now, that toenail is about 20% more narrow than the other.

The worst part was afterward due to the nail bed being scraped. Nerve pain for about 4 or 5 days straight if I bumped it or put much weight on that foot.

All of the shots are by far the worst part. Absolutely brutal!

The shots are the worst.

I've had them partially removed and entire nail removed twice.

Entire nail removal sucks because once the numbing wears off that hurts too.

I am a podiatrist and take multiple out every day. There should be no pain at all during the procedure. If patients are feeling it then it's just not numbed up enough. 1 stick dorsal to plantar lateral and same thing on the medial side and you will have a numb toe.

To the OP, there is some mild soreness afterwards, but usually less than the ingrown itself.

Again, you should not feel anything during the actual procedure.

My dad cut a couple of mine out back in high school. He used some numbing spray prior to the shot, and even the shot didn't hurt that bad. He sprayed at the base of my big toe, gave me a little bit of lidocaine in a shot, waited a couple of minutes and then gave me another shot. It wasn't infected, just wedged down in the skin. Used a little flat metal tool to pry it out, then snipped the horn out of there. Maybe 10-15 minutes. When the feeling came back it didn't feel so great, but a day or two later I was fine.
