Garage gym setup recs

Moving from an apartment building where I mostly had the gym to myself to a house with a two car garage. No going back to a commercial gym at this point, so looking to get started with an at home setup. I mainly stick to the big three lifts with some dumbbells and cables mixed in, so I’m thinking some kind of power rack. I’ve never had a spotter so I manage weight accordingly, but some stops built in would be cool, not a dealbreaker. Similar, it would be nice to have the ability to add cables later if I find I miss them, maybe like a modular system? Space isn’t an issue since cars won’t go in the garage, I figure a lot of folks did this during lockdowns and have an idea what they’d do different now.
Is there any reason to buy certain plates/bar over another? What features matter here, or do any? Garage floor is concrete, but I could lay down a mat or something.
Any power racks you recommend? Is it worth it to spend more? Good bench to go with it?
Any general advice is appreciated. I’ve been consistently lifting for awhile now with a good routine so I’m not too worried about spending a little more for something if it makes a practical difference.

Horse stall mats from tractor supply are the most economical option for this, I think. They work great as gym flooring.
+1 on the rep rack posted above.

I do like the rack and I’m playing legos on their website right now, but as a $4K option that cable system better blow me.

They don’t have a plate loaded version?

Get the rep one without the cable system. Make your own cable system or buy a $50 pulley system off Amazon and use it on the pull up bar of the power rack

Here is my set up. I splurged on my weights but not my rack. It is homemade out of 4x4’s. It’s does the trick.

They do and it’s much less, so that’s likely the route I’ll go.
No one has a preference on bars and plates? Seems like prices are all over the place for them.

I bought a Rogue Ohio bar. The bar is important, didn't want to go cheap there. But I did go cheap on the plates. Just bought some second hand ones off Facebook and they're fine. Spend the savings on extra Dumbbell options. Get some bumpers if you're deadlifting or doing any cleans/snatches.
Also the adjustable bench from Rep is probably the best you'll find.
Lots of good info here LINK

Stall mats from tractor supply. Go to Rep fitness' website and get whatever rack meets your budget. I got the basic PR-1100 with the weight storage arms and cable attachment and it's served me well for almost 5 years now

I would make that a dealbreaker. Zero reason not to bench and squat inside the rack with safety pins if you’re alone or don’t have experienced spotters.

List I made previously
quote:
do you want full rack or do you want half rack? essentially you need to decide what dedicated space you have. I would suggest wall mounted half rack as far as what brands, depends on budget top brands for home gym. in order imo only
top teir legend sorinex rogue straydog strength
mid teir rep elitefts/willaims strength(can be top depending on choice)
lower teir (but still more than anyone on here will ever need) getrxd bolt titan
as far as what to get, i suggest 3x3 with 1" or 5/8" holes so you can add lots of attachments. I prefer 5/8" but many of the best attachments are 1" only now. as far as what to get
rack- 2/4/or 6 post rack
adjustable bench- rep or rogue imo
bar- suggest rogue
weights- decide if you want steel or rubber
for flooring do 4x6x3/4" rubber stall mats from tractor supply
i would add gymnastics rings first, then bands from westside, elitefts or rogue. from these add a strongman sandbag then you can branch to either dumbbells or kettlebells and all the attachments.
From Dixie
quote:
Things to not skimp on: Power Rack.
Get a quality one that is either 1” or 5/8” hardware and you’ll never need to replace it.
Barbell. If you’re in a garage in Louisiana, bite the bullet and get stainless for rust resistance. Get a barbell that works for your needs (I recommend Rogue Ohio Bar for oly and Ohio Power Bar for powerlifting style).
Weights. Get bumpers. Versatility is king in garage gyms and bumpers are simply more versatile and will be more resistant to corrosion.
Bench. This would be the one place that has some price decisions. A cheap flat bench can be found on Amazon that will serve you well. If you want an adjustable, spend the money on a good one.
Priorities after that (in my opinion, not everyone is the same):
1. Olympic Rings
2. Weight vest
3. Dumbbells. I have powerblocks but have heard good things about nuobells. While regular separate DB’s is certainly best, in a garage gym space and versatility is limited so adjustables are going to work better for most.
4. Kettlebells. You can also get kettlebell attachments to the powerblocks if you get those.
5. Dip attachment
6. Rowing machine/bike
While I may have forgotten something, pretty much anything after this is a luxury item. Many people go for GHD items, I went for specialty bars. There are a lot of different companies and price variations, but I’ve abided by the saying “buy once, cry once.” There is no doubt in gym equipment more likely than not the more expensive item is going to last you longer.
Tiers of brands: Sorinex Rogue Rep Fitness (except their benches are legit) Fringe Sports Fray Titan If buying American is a concern to you, you’ll want to avoid Rep and Titan as the majority of their products are made in China.

We picked up our Rogue rack, barbell, and plates off of Facebook Marketplace for a good price. Check there first, or Craigslist.

I have bought all my plates and dumbbells at Academy. Marketplace is always a good option.
Rep makes awesome benches.
Rogue Ohio Power Bar or Texas Power Bar for your barbell.
Fringe, Titan, Bells of Steel, and Bolt are a few more manufacturers you can check out.

You can get so much stuff second hand if you keep looking.
1-Barbell
2-Bumper plates
3-Horse Mats
4-Rack with pull up bar and possibly dip attachment
5-Bench
After that’s it’s whatever you want. To me everything else is for specific training or just so I don’t get bored.
