I started building some muscle over the last few months but I ate too much crap food and I’m getting my gut back.

Shedding my gut again, already did it once, is my priority over the next few months.

What’s my path here? Should I just focus on maintaining muscle built? No way to grow muscle while cutting my gut right?

goal should be to keep protein as high as you can while staying compliant as possible while trying to build strength.

Dont get crazy with the overall volume of the heavy lifting and dont go crazy on the cardio.

Start small on the diet and cardio and you can build some muscle while cutting. your guy will act as the extra energy source. Not gonna build a lot but can build some.

any specific plan you are using?

Add fat too. Protein and fat, cut carbs. Everything 777 is accurate AF.

I cut the gut once already but didn’t care about adding or even preserving muscle mass

Adding muscle while cutting is two opposite things

When cutting you want to maintain the muscle gains you have made

Like 777 said protein is key in that

Putting on muscle will result in adding body fat, no way around it.

I've gotten a lot stronger in the last year while keeping the same weight. If you have fat to use as fuel you can get stronger while losing weight, or fat people wouldn't get a lot stronger while simultaneously losing a bunch of weight.

It's easier to gain when you are in a surplus, especially, when you are already pretty lean, but you don't have to get fatter to get stronger. We aren't body builders

not necessary. get your calories right, get your protein right, split the rest of the calories between fat and carbs whichever way keeps you happy.

yup

you can cut while still eating carbs

the RP cut is basically high protein, good amount of carbs and lower fat

It’s actually easier imo to eat carbs because it’s more volume per calorie

Nb4 muh insulin

ETA: think 100 calories of strawberries vs 100 calories of peanut butter

Peanut butter is more filling but your point is noted. That's why I try to go with fibrous carbs

It is possible to gain lean muscle while in a deficit but it heavily depends on your current state of body composition.

Someone around or above 20% body fat that is also not near their genetic limit of muscle mass should have no problem adding muscle in a deficit (assuming their macros, and training are on point). Now, that slight amount muscle added may be masked by the loss of water weight and glycogen making the muscles appear smaller even though true lean mass has been added.

Bingo. I follow Paul Revelia on YouTube and he has some good videos on fat loss while building muscle ( here's one). He's also an advocate of walking to burn calories to preserve muscle mass. Lots of good nutrition (he's a huge proponent of flexible dieting) and training info.

It's not impossible to do both at the same time, it just makes the goal of each harder to achieve.

Reason people bulk and cut seperately.

And on the carb/fat thing it really depends on the person. My body responds better to high protein /low carb when cutting.

After a few cuts you will learn your body and what's best for you.
