He has sent a statin to my pharmacy...

LDL (bad) - 207
HDL (good) 74
Tri - 82

Total - 297
Total ratio - 4.01

5'10" 177 lbs

I've been doing IF since summer (usually 16:8)
at work, I often eat a sandwich
at home, I eat a lot of meat.
I don't eat much fast food or processed food.

In total, I don't consume more calories than I burn.

I drink alcohol probably a bit more than I should.
I drink coffee daily.

What gives?

Do cholestoral numbers even matter? Am I unhealthy?
I heard Dr. Paul Saladino on Rogan say he was in the 500s in total cholesterol. The guy has a six pack
I just don't know what to believe anymore.

If you’re otherwise healthy it’s probably hereditary. But I’m no expert.

I don’t think anyone really understands what exactly cholesterol is all about.

I’d do what your doctor recommended and see how your numbers react.

That's your problem.

Do you use a French press for coffee? That can raise your cholesterol quite a bit.

My dad’s cholesterol is 250+ by mine has always been <150.

My HDL level is usually in the low end of the range: 35-40, though.

Get them to check your ldl density. High ldl isn’t necessarily bad depending on the different densities in your ldl.

Paul Mason has a lot of videos explaining this on YouTube.

Cholesterol repairs things that are broken. So if you have higher levels than you would normally have it means something is not right and cholesterol is trying to fix it. Your body makes a bunch of cholesterol every day because it is essential to your brain and body functioning correctly.

1.) You need an LDL-P test. Normal test is practically meaningless.
2.) I’d never start a statin after one test. At least take two weeks, make sure nothing is odd in your diet, test again.

This is really all that matters with it. The trig/HDL ratio is below 2 (82/74). Anything below 1 is golden but no need to really worry until it gets above 3 and 4 is the time to seriously consider lifestyle changes.

I'm still waiting on information that counters the general trig/hdl ratio rule. So if anyone has anything that counters that, thank you for sharing.

Yep. I've got my dad's genes and he died of a heart attack just past his 35th birthday and 4 of his 5 brothers never saw age 60, all due to heart issues. All 3 of his sisters died of various forms of cancer.

So, I'm predisposed to having issues with cholesterol and high blood pressure. My youngest sister died this past spring from a cancerous brain tumor at age 62. Took her out in 2 weeks once she showed signs of things not being right.

I’m sorry. Are you on meds then?

Why do people not like statins? Anyone know?

I took statins briefly (cholesterol has been between 207-237). Calcium score was 0. Doc said it still wouldn't hurt to get it a little lower and put me on a low dose statin. I took it for 4 days and didn't shite for 4 days so I got off of it.

Thanks, and yes. I've been on statins for a few years now and it holds my levels in check.

The first drug he gave me, I took for a few weeks and noticed I started having knee and ankle pain, especially if I had been sitting down or just waking up and getting back on my feet. The joints felt stiff and had pain in them and that is one of the potential side effects of some of them. The initial drug was Crestor and I'm now taking a generic of Lipitor.

He changed meds and it's all be OK since.

There are concerns on physical pain, but my reluctance would come from potential dementia risk. Even a little risk scares me.

Curious, how’s your c reactive protein score? Heart attacks are about much more than cholesterol.

Ever heard of vascular dementia?

CRP is a nonspecific marker of inflammation that is not used as a marker for your risk of MI. It’s useful for certain rheumatologic diseases and inflammatory diseases to track treatment response or degree of active disease.
