Need help with getting my thoughts out of my head while jogging!!!

A little about me:
Male 46yo
6’4” 280lbs
Lost 100lbs and maintaining

I took up jogging/walking and now signed up for the tiger5k I’m December. I am training for this and have a hard time with clearing my mind while jogging. I know I can jog but end up walking. I jog/walk the LSU lakes on Sundays and have a 11:30min/mile but while running in my neighborhood I’m more of a 13min/mile.

It’s all in my head and I need to get a clear head. Any tips???

find a running partner

a partner is always the best way to be held accountable

I think a lot of it goes into your breathing pattern, which helps your endurance out, but also gives you confidence that you can just keep going. I breath “inhale-inhale-exhale-exhale” with a 4 step cadence. It’s what works for me, find a breathing pattern that works for you that can stay consistent an it should change your mindset...

Something I've noticed is that I'm more prone to stop running when I'm paying attention to things like time, pace, distance, etc.

I leave all electronics behind and just run. I've noticed I always make it way further than when I'm constantly checking a stopwatch or fitbit for distances/times. Enjoy the nature and just breathe.

Headphones, headphones, headphones.

Blast your favorite music and put on some clothes that you like. Enjoy it.

It's only recently that I am able to run for longer distances, and it is most certainly all in your head if your legs and lungs are cooperating.

I recently ran my first 5k. I was in incredible shape as a kid, got fat, and am trimming up again. Make good playlist for your 5k; it will help. Also, a running partner is awesome. The first mile I establish pace. Then, I like to play a round of golf, read a book, or watch a movie in my mind. Before you know it, you are in the home stretch.

i HATE jogging but run 2 5ks a year.

I try to find a pace where my breathing pattern stabilizes and I can relax my arms and jaw.

It is slow. I also like to listen to slow music. Something that you can just relax and listen to. I don’t need pump up music. I like James Taylor on the playlist.

That was my Achille's Heel when I first started running many years ago. I had a very hard time the first mile or so getting my breathing pattern in sync with my pace, but once it was in sync running became so much easier.

Also, maintaining a steady pace and not alternating slow/intermediate/fast helps keep your breathing pattern in tune with your body.

Not to be a dick but at your weight there are much more useful things you could be doing for cardio besides running. In fact running would be one of the last things you probably should be doing at 280.

First, congrats, you are doing great.

2 techniques when you feel you need to walk.

(1) pick out a tree or sign about 100-200 yards away. You can walk when you get to the sign. Of course, when you get there, instead of walking, pick a new marker and start over.

(2) my favorite. Just tell yourself you can walk when you physically cannot jog another step. If you can take another step you keep jogging. You will find you can always jog another step.

I would say congrats on staying active even at 280. Stay focused and I would agree with keeping your favorite music blasting and breathing in and out with a cadence

I got a metronome app for my phone that really helps. Set the metronome to 180 beats per minute and try to match your cadence to that (1 step per beat).

Good for you. I'm in a similar position of trying to "fix" myself, though I started at 280 and am down to about 215 now since August.

I kind of rely on people like you to keep me motivated and accountable. If you can do it, then frick, what excuse do I have. Hopefully that doesn't come off shitty, I mean it as a compliment.

As for the question, I use music. As someone else mentioned, something slow and relaxing, not something to pump me up, but sooth me. I personally use Michael Buble.

Keep doing what you are doing. Just keep moving. Add some sprints to your jogging/walking routine.
