I do GreySkull and I walk 1 mile after. Once a week I jog a mile, most days do pushups and sit ups. I’m 50, I always assumed workout shakes were just something to make you look more bowed up or whatever. I’ve never known much about them. What do they do, is it something someone at 50 should take or is that mostly a younger person thing, TIA

Are you asking about preworkout and postworkout supplements or protein shakes? Cause all 3 of those are diff things.

Also, is this a bad trolling attempt?

The shakes, no not trolling at all. I see younger guys always drinking pre and post workout drinks. I honestly don’t know a lot about them.

I like a pre to give a little energy boost and better focus while I’m working out. I prefer something with a decent amount of caffeine and beta alanine, which will make you a bit tingly. At 46 I’d like to get as strong as I can before age takes that potential away. Pres are just an aid.

I drink a protein shake after workouts to give my muscles the feed they need to recover and grow.

Start with something non-aggressive for a pre-workout. You don't want the jitters from too much caffeine or to feel like you're going to claw your face off from the beta-alanine.

Pre workout is a blend of vitamins and minerals with some dose of caffeine and maybe other stimulants to help you have energy to workout. There are many different brands. Most are over priced garbage.

There is also an intra workout. Which is usually a high carb drink to help fuel the muscles during a workout.

Post workouts have a lot of vitamins and minerals, like a pre, but without all the caffeine and stimulants. The idea is to aid in recovery.

Protein shakes are just a dietary supplement. If you need more protein intake, it’s an easy way to get it in fast.

Being that your goal is general fitness and health, I would not be one to be overly encouraging to use them. If you’re eating a proper diet, you should be getting everything you need. All the supplements are useful, but only to a degree. They do not substitute proper programming or nutrition. Not saying you can’t use them if you choose to, but I don’t think it’s super necessary. If you were a competitor trying to hit numbers for a deadline, that would be a different conversation.

In the past I've said that my "pre-workout" = black coffee, post-workout = black coffee, intra-workout = black coffee, and I wasn't joking, but for years I really didn't know what the hell pre-workout was, and to eventually learn that it's mostly caffeine led me to decide that I would just stick with the coffee.

But I may have to try some of this gummy bear juice. That shite sounds awesome and terrible all in one package. I wonder how it would taste mixed into coffee?

Pres are just for energy. If you have good energy, you don't need them. Or just drink coffee.

You don't need a post workout recovery drink.

If you are trying to hit protein goals, drink a protein shake whenever it is convenient.

I'm not giving up my coffee, and that's why I do the stim free pre.

I like the Transparent Labs one a lot. I had the Ryse Pump Daddy and it made my stomach cramp every time.

Transparent Labs has been my go to for any fitness supplement. Their ingredients list is usually a fraction of most everyone else and they use Stevia instead of Sucralose.

I typically only use a preworkout if I am going to be doing something for an extended amount of time. If I'm just doing weights and it isn't going to be long, I'll usually skip it. Leg days I always do a preworkout powder and creatine in water before I go out to lift. If it is just arms/shoulders, no real reason to.

Where they seem to help me most are big cardio days. I do spin classes 3-4 days a week, the minimum is 45 minutes and I'll go up to 90 minutes occasionally. A typical week is 45 twice a week and a 60 minute or longer on the weekend. If it is a boring endurance ride, I don't bother, but if it is going to be something more strenuous or prolonged, I'll use them. I also like to have electrolytes in at least one of my water bottles. For the longer sessions, I put them in both water bottles. For really long 90 minutes or longer rides, I'll take a banana or some intraworkout snack with me. You'll hit a wall at some point if you don't.

And like others have said, post workouts are the same without the caffeine or stimulants. I've never bothered with those. I'll do a protein shake after lifting usually, and after longer rides.

HVAU,
I was using C4 and the focus and energy was terrific. It was too much caffeine for me. I switched to Genius Pre. Had better energy and felt more solid when using C4. Anyway, I agree with your take on pre and post workout supplements. Better diet helps a ton.

I’m considering getting some. I’ve been having issues during some of my workouts. Do you have any that you have liked?

I haven’t tried either. I’ve done Total War, Gorilla mode, and Six Star. I liked the Total War with beta alanine. The Gorilla mode didn’t have that, but I definitely got a boost to my focus. The Six Star has beta alanine, but I don’t get the tingles if I drink right at the beginning of my workout, as opposed to, 15 minutes before. The Six Star is super cheap compared to the others.

I’ll check out those others.
