Can I ask you people a question about burning calories?

If I run a mile in 8 minutes and a mile in 11 minutes did I burn the same amount of active calories?

Also, if I run a mile in 100 deg do I burn the same amount of calories as running the same mile in 60 degrees?

It’s all about your heart rate.

You’re exerting more energy to run faster, so no.

Your body will be regulating its temperature with more exertion in 100 degrees. Heart rate will be up as well. More calories burned.

Not much more, but definitely more.

But I’m running 3 minutes longer going slow.

I have an interesting comparison with info from my Garmin watch.

I ran 3 miles straight and it came out to 450 calories.

3 weeks later I walked, did a quick warm up jog, then did 4 - 4 minute interval runs with 2 minutes walking in between. Walked for 5 minutes to cool down at the end. Grand total was the same distance and time as when I ran 3 miles without stopping, but I burned 50 less calories (I was in a little better shape too).

Not exactly what you are describing, but I cant believe I could walk half the time and beat my running time. During the 4 minutes I was going all out. Calories was about the same as long as the time and distance were identical.

You will burn more calories in both situations, faster pace and in higher temperatures.

But In both situations the calorie difference is very small.

People do not run at a faster pace to burn more calories. It’s either to save time or to improve cardiovascular health/endurance.

It will take your heart rate longer to recover to a resting pace the harder you push it.

You're overthinking this.

I'll give you an example from tonight. I had a rest day on the bike and rode 30 miles @ 17.1mph. Last week I made the same ride (30@17.2) the main difference was tonight the temp was about 13 degrees cooler on average*. My average heart rate was 123bpm with a max of 128 last week is was 135/143. The hotter ride I burned 1540 Kcal and tonight I burned 1239 Kcal. I have ridden the same ride when the heat index was over 110 and my avg heart rate was near 150 and a lot more calories burned.

No. Increases in speed when running/biking/rowing/swimming all increase the calories burned both in distance and time assuming a significant increase in speed which a drop of 3 mins off an 11 minute mile certainly is. There would be a increase in speed where the time/speed caloric burn would be equal but it is a smaller jump than reducing a running mile by three minutes.

* while ambient was only 13 deg cooler on average it rained on me from mile 12 to 18 tonight so I was soaked and my body temp was lower than it would have been.
