Sure. I was already practicing a bit of Wim Hof breathing as well as cold plunges. I definitely found myself being more intentional about nasal breathing.

I do feel like it made my mild sinus issues less annoying.

Have you gotten competent at the CO2 stuff yet? Like, the certain number of breaths per minute with the exhale a beat longer than the inhale?

In the sense that my aerobic capacity and ability to recover has increased during exercise, most definitely yes. But honestly still struggle at the standalone breathing exercises like apnea breathing. I still register on the pretty low end of co2 tolerance according to those exercises. It could just be a mental thing from overthinking it when doing the breathing outside of exercise. I should probably focus more on breathwork outside of exercise to be honest. I don't do a ton besides maybe some box breathing or apnea breathing before bed to slow things down.

I would say this is one of the primary impacts I'm hopeful about. It's not like my allergies are terrible, but just enough to be annoying. How long of taping at night would you imagine before I have a chance to see some material improvements?

I dont really tape so I couldn't tell you, but I am super conscious about nasal breathing at all times during the day and while I can't watch myself sleep I feel like i'm sticking to it then. I will say I feel like my allergies and sinus crap improved pretty quickly once I started, like just a couple months if that. But don't sleep on the role of cold showers. Allergies are basically automimmune disorders, and there's a link between hot/cold therapy and alleviating autoimmune dysfunction. I take 2 minutes every morning after my regular shower to douse myself in cold water. I Think it's played as much of a role in the allergy issue as the breathing but it's hard to separate the two.

Are you taping from above your lip to below or just the lips themselves?
Just barely above to just barely below. About a square inch of tape I would say.

Pretty much all my workouts now are nasal unless absolutely necessary. Doing HIIT on th assault bike using nasal only has raised my lactic threshold and endurance significantly.

I started focusing on nasal breathing when I really got serious in BJJ about 10 years ago. I train with some big dudes and cardio is the number 1 killer of a good roll when you go for an extended time against somebody with the same skill set as you. Furthermore, most guys have no clue how to breath properly and it can be a very big advantage on the mat. For that reason, I use pretty much the same breathing techniques Rickson Gracie uses which has helped my cardio tremendously.

As a sidenote, after I came off the vent after Covid in August, I had almost zero lung capacity and honestly without knowing those breathing techniques, I am not sure I would have made it.

Just finished this book. Fantastic amount of knowledge in it and how correct breathing can really be a form of preventative maintenance for our overall health.

Using breathing techniques while going through a rigorous portion of a cycling workout and watching my HR drop like rock has been fun as well.

Mainly just trying to inhale through the nose for 4 seconds and then exhaling through the nose for 4 seconds because it's all I can physically handle at the moment for an extended time.
Also playing around with holding my breath for 10 seconds, then mouth-to-mouth for 9 breaths, nose-to-mouth for 7 breaths, and then nose-to-nose for 5 breaths.

Ran this AM after a 30 day break. Focused on trying to breathe through my nose only. Wow. Felt like I was running with a plastic bag over my head. Had to stop several times. That hasn't happened in a LONG time. Guess I was breathing through my mouth and didn't realize it. How long does it take to get over that? Made it three miles today. Not sure I could have gone much more than that. Will try again Weds and Thurs. Focusing on nose breathing for my gym workouts as well.

It took me a year or so to get comfortable running long distances doing nasal only. It's an incremental process. I would work my way up a quarter miles at a time. Three miles doing nasal on your first go is definitely a serious adjustment. Tbh that's still about my threshold. The good news is that once you open it up and go back to nasal inhale/mouth exhale (or whatever your normal breathing is), you tear the roof off the rest of your run.

This is my hope. I will say that my snot rockets were fricking incredible today. I have 3 miles on Weds and 6 on Thurs. Not sure if I want to try 10+ on Sat or not, but might give it a go. My goal is to get my HR down while increasing my speed.

Glad to see this thread providing some value.

I'm about six weeks into taping at night. I do think I'm sleeping better, but no radical changes yet that I'm aware of.

In the same direction, someone recently put me on to this app Othership. It has a variety of breathwork type of exercises. Please let the thread know if you come across anything cool/useful. I had never done anything like this before, so it was nice to have it guided.

I started this last week and wanted to confirm you thought it was useful - basically, I'm taking my regular shower and then turning it to cold for 1-2 minutes at the end. Is that worse than just taking a flat our cold shower?

What did you eat for lunch? A dead rat? A rotten egg? A turd sandwich?

If I try to breath exclusively through my nose, my HR is fricking through the roof.

I just bought an Airwaav at Wodapalooza to try during long-assed, cardio intense workouts.

Weird.
Mine usually drops between 10-15 beats almost immediately when I breath relatively slowly (2 to 3sec) through my nose.

Finally got my Garmin watch running. I’ll take it for a spin tomorrow and see how my HR is affected.

I am curious about this too. It feels like I can't get enough air.
