Update:
If Monday was a 10 difficult then today was a 6-7. Same course, slightly slower pace. I never had to stop like Monday. As far as HR goes, I checked today’s vs a run on the same course from Oct 25th. On that day, I paced at 8:30 and had an average HR of 144. Today I paced at 9:25 and average HR of 166.
So, it is a much more intense workout for the same distance imo. I think I’ll keep doing this on my Mon and Weds runs of 3 miles and see if it impacts my Thurs and Sat runs. I can’t imagine trying this on a hilly course.

Well frick. Breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth is just about the same as all nose. Tried again tonight. Paced a little faster, but times still way off what they were and running is way harder than it was. Guess I was a mouth breather and didn’t realize it. Didn’t think this would be this hard but it is.

Mouth to Nose Transition
Looks like I might need to temper my expectations. This was a good read and reflects my first week’s experience.

Good find, thank you. When doing HIT I feel like I am suffocating when nose breathing. So in that case it maybe okay to mouth breathe until in can catch my breath.

You may want to lower your intensity until your nasal breathing capacity/intensity catches up. Sounds counter intuitive but you have to let your body adapt. Trust me I went through the same and still do.

I started this last week and wanted to confirm you thought it was useful - basically, I'm taking my regular shower and then turning it to cold for 1-2 minutes at the end. Is that worse than just taking a flat our cold shower?
Yea that's all I do. I'm definitely not jumping into the cold right off the bat and I still have to really push myself to do it after taking a hot shower
But the goal is to be able to suppress any conscious or subconscious reactions your body has to the chill such as shivering by focusing on deep breathing. It's another way to rewire how your body responds to stress. I've done a 40 degree immersion tub several times and have pushed it up to 15 minutes before I lose control of my breathing discipline.
Obviously everyone will have different experiences and at the end of the day we're all tinkering around with different stuff to see how we react, and there can be a lot of contributing factors or placebo effects. That said i've quit zyrtec and an allergy medicine altogether since I've started doing this and I hardly ever get canker sores, which are autoimmune reactions. In general I just find it's a good habit if you're in the business of these sort of health disciplines.

Tape came in. Taped lips shut last night. I didn’t die.
ETA: 3 miles this AM. Slowed it down today and didn't have nearly the issues. Paced at 9:50. Average HR down to 159.

Y'all still doing this? Any updates? Just listened to the Rogan interview, debating reading the book. Top comments on Amazon says there is a lot of inaccurate data in the book. I'm open to trying either way since there is no possible downside.

Still running with nose breathing. It's getting way easier and I no longer feel like I'm dying. Ran last night at a 9:30 pace and a HR of 156. Doing 6 miles tonight at roughly the same pace.

Anyone have any updates? For me, with the nose breathing at night, it's fine, but I'm back to getting up to pee once or twice. About 3 months in, I'm not sure I notice any marked improvements anywhere.

If you check the author's bank account you will see substantial improvements. I found the information to be largely inaccurate and unsubstantiated. Chewing you food longer won't reverse the effects of evolution.

I have a family member that started taping and immediately enjoyed the benefits of longer/better sleep AND near complete elimination of their asthma.

I’m speaking directly to all the evolutionary nonsense. Orthodonture, skull shape, mouth size. Those things don’t change in 500 years.
Nose breathing is certainly better. But there’s a lot of garbage in the book.

I only have to get up at night if I’ve been drinking beer. Otherwise, I sleep through the night fine. Pretty sure it has eliminated my snoring. My wife snores pretty bad. On nights where I can get her to wear tape, she snores very little or not at all.
