Anyone else surprised by number of “healthy”people who workout and also smoke cigarettes?

Whether they’re out on the town having some drinks, or relaxing on the beach in amazes me that so many people look to be in great shape and yet still smoke.
I have even noticed that some people light up immediately after a workout walking out of the gym when they get in their car.

I suppose it mostly depends on what they are smoking. Like if they are smoking the stuff that our government required to have a bunch of poisonous shite in, or are they just smoking organic tobacco. Nicotine is a wonder drug after all. Obviously you don't want to over do it. Also those filters are horrific for you since they put shards of fiberglass into your lungs that are stuck there forever.
What is probably stranger is people who are "healthy" and drink. Alcohol has no redeeming quality unless you are susceptible to stroke or heart attack since it thins the blood. It also wrecks your sleep cycle which has exponential downstream negative effects.

Drinking 2 glasses of wine is always going to be viewed more favorably than someone smoking 2-3 cigarettes.

I'm surprised by anyone smoking ever.

You can view things however you want. Alcohol drinking has zero benefit to a healthy person while tobacco has potential health benefits to a healthy person and has medicinal uses. Alcohol drinking is nonsensical at best nowadays. Coincidentally smokers also have less risk of COVID, because of nicotine in tobacco.

This is a true story, silly, but true.
Back in the day I was a daily runner and worked my way up to 10 miles a run a couple days a week and between 5-7 miles the other days.
One of my cousins decided he wanted to try a lifestyle change and get in shape and asked to run for a while with me until he got tired and he'd stop while I kept going.
I agreed and he showed up at my house with shorts, t-shirt, running shoes and a DAMN CIGARETTE hanging out his mouth. He made it 2 blocks before quitting and never came back to try again.
I just shook my head and laughed for most of that days run.

I went on a guided climbing trip with a guide who smoked. He said a lot of alpinists smoke.

How bad is vaping? It can't be as bad as cigarettes but it can't be very good either. What's the thoughts here? FWIW, I'm very thin and active.

Frequency matters. If someone is a habitual smoker, like need to take breaks at work to smoke, then that’s a problem. Having a couple on a Friday night after work probably won’t cause issues. I like to have one or two cigars a month, and it doesn’t affect me in terms of health or performance in the gym. My doctor knows I do this, and he agreed that it’s not a big deal.

Moderate drinking isn't a problem (14 drinks per week or less).

My high school principal smoked a pack and a half of Marlboro reds a day for 30+ years and ran 10 miles every morning before school. Just because someone's a smoker doesn't mean they can't lead a relatively healthy and active lifestyle. Just sayin
