Found out I have nash aka non alcoholic liver disease. Have to do more test to see if I have cirrhosis. Has anybody here had to deal with this?

Read this.

The best diet is the one you believe in, because you will more likely stick to it. But most importantly is that you are in a calorie deficit, regardless of the macros. You should be less than 18% BF. Exercising 140 min a week in zone 2 and 15 min in zone 5. These are the biggest levers that we can pull for our health.

I've been in the med diet for four days and my blood sugar is down to 99. My biggest challenge will be finding an exercise I can do. I did martial arts training for over 20 years then found out my neck was messed up. Had a three level fusion that left my arms paralyzed for awhile. Gained use of them back with a lot of pt. But they still don't work right and doing any walking makes my motor function in my legs very weak. Nerves are all screwed up. Dr said he couldn't make me better but only kept it from getting worse. The only fat I carry is around my stomach area where my liver and spleen are swelled up. And I had pancreatitis twice this year. Dr wants to do a liver biopsy to see if I have cirrhosis. Thanks for the link.

Are we sure about this being nonalcoholic? Liver disease alone sure, but liver disease and pancreatitis in the same person is most likely to be from alcohol.

My recs:
-zero alcohol, zero sugary beverages, minimal to no sugar in general - both alcohol and fructose disproportionately cause fat deposition in the liver
- as much moderate intensity exercise as you can do. Exercise bike may be easiest for you. I suspect your strength and endurance will improve if you stick to it. Can’t see how this kind of exercise would harm your spine in any way
-modest calorie deficit
-go over your medications with your doctor to ensure they aren’t working against you in some way

Thanks for your reply. Diffently non alcoholic. I've had maybe one beer in two years because of the pancreatitis. Even before that I never hardly drank alcohol. Living in Louisiana comes with a price. Love my gumbo and bbq. But always watched my weight and have stayed the same weight for years. Have a bit of a stomach but every where else is skinny. After research I found out it is a side effect of liver disease. During pt they would have me on a stationary bike. That didn't seem to bother my neck that bad so that seems like the best bet. Thanks

Yeah. I had the same thing, but didn't want to admit to myself or my doctor that I was a raging alcoholic. I'm not saying that's you, but at the very least, be honest with yourself if there are other causes. My doctor also said it was nonalcoholic, but I knew the real cause of my liver issues.

For me I really was a closeted raging alcoholic and have since gotten that under control (3 years sober) and that has helped a lot.

Another thing is beets - they are a miracle food for the liver. I'm not a fan of beets, but tried to get as much beet into my diet as I could - I would juice them, add beets to my fruit smoothies, etc. Adding beets to your diet as a regular addition may help.

I drank some when I was in my 20's. But nothing overboard. Iam in my 50's now. I just don't drink. The was a time before I found out about my neck needing three level fusion. Was in a lot of pain so I took a lot of ibuprofen and bc powder to get through work.

Just got back from my doctor's and they are scheduling an ultrasound. All ready had a CT scan with contrast. Said my liver is 20 cm and my spleen is enlarged. Dr is sending me to a GI specialist. I've been on the Mediterranean diet all week with no sugar. Blood sugar down too 99.

Have you looked into a liver detox supplement? I’m currently taking a supplement by Himalaya and it’s made of mostly herbs

This is good to know. Fatty liver runs in my family and I always like ways to get in front of it.

Great start. For exercise, it sounds like you might be a good candidate for a rowing machine or recumbent bike.

Rowing machine wouldn't work because of my neck. Just doing dishes inflames the nerves in my neck. A stationary bike is best option. The kind you set down with legs forward. They had me on that when my arms were paralyzed after surgery. But they are expensive.

Made shrimp with baby spinach, yellow bell pepper and feta cheese today. Have pantry stocked with sardines and tuna for a snack. But liver and spleen still feel bad. But did get a referral to a GI today. Dr put a rush on it. Thanks for all the great advice from everyone.

Side note. Not used to posting without at least one person have some negative comment or put down.

This board is generally supportive. The snark is for the OT.

Beets were part of my protocol to regenerate my liver after years of steroid use/abuse. It worked.

Look up Dr. Berg on YouTube ..... he has some great info. Also, start out light with exercise. 5-Minute Fitness is a good one.

Do you take statins for cholesterol! Statins fricked my liver up for a year.

Certain painkillers are not good for your liver either

The good news is the liver can heal itself if you can address the cause.

NASH and NAFLD are not the same.
I have been going through many tests for the liver over the last year and have NAFLD that came about after having mono.

NASH means you have liver damage already. NAFLD does not have damaged cells, just fat storage. It is important to distinguish which one you have.
