Don't feel bad, most people can't, or don't want to. It's all too blurry and probably embarrassing

I wanna say it was when I drank scotch. Full disclosure, it was the Costco Kirkland brand. I know they say alcohol is alcohol, but scotch just doesn’t sit well with me.

I love booze but I’ve been abstinent most of January along with whole 30. Been a night and day difference.

The last 3 days I PR’d a 5k, sprinted 5 miles in trails and set PRs on Strava, and ran a 10 miler. Felt great every day. Even during my best weeks of running, that’s a lot more than I normally do and usually at a slower pace. That being said, I normally drink 5 nights a week and probably too much on the weekends.

I hate that there’s a difference, but I’d be lying to myself if I didn’t say that cutting alcohol has made a change for the better. Diet has a bit to do with that, but I eat pretty healthy most often anyways.

you were running 5ks in 23 mins at 5'8 190? Even if a totally flat run, that's pretty impressive. i assume you have a decent muscle base. Also, 12 lbs in basically two weeks is a lot to lose. i can drop 5 easily by cutting alcohol, and another 5 when i get into pretty deep nutritional ketosis, but i'm 6', and 2 weeks would be pretty extreme (but it has happened).

alcohol is the biggest challenge to my overall health. i've cut down to 1-2 glasses of red wine a night with a couple days totally off a week, and then the occasional beer on a blow-it day (like last night with mexican--although i did limit the chips, and did a pork and cheese stuffed poblano with a fried egg, guac and cheese dip--oh and three pints of beer).

I'm toying around with running a full marathon for the first time--i do halves and i've done a marathon in 24 hours (a half one afternoon and another the next am), but never a full + getting into tris. So, I'm going to have to cut further because I'm old.

Yeah. I’m getting past my mid 30s and I have learned it takes a toll that it didn’t used to. I’m in the best shape of my life and I’ve learned how huge a difference the diet does to keep me there. Days of drinking a 6 pack with Pizza once a week are sadly in my rear view.

Same here except approaching mid-40s. With proper diet and mental attitude, I feel awesome. But alcohol is much more insidious now than 10 years ago. More than 3 and I get down mentally and emotionally the next day. Just not worth it. Plus I find drunk 40+ yos (myself included) obnoxious and tedious. It's that age where you're looking back trying to justify your existence, and alcohol can make that messy (a broad spectrum from braggadocious to snowflake melts).

Anywhoo, getting old sucks but I feel freaking awesome. Never in my 30s could I just go out and decide to run 15 miles for the hell of it.

I recently started to carefully watch my alcohol consumption. I like whiskey and soda water. My tolerance is waaaaaaaaaay down since college so I’m not worried about the calories. I can usually only have two, maybe three drinks before I have enough.

I know alot of people like vodka when they’re trying to be careful about what they drink. Usually vodka tonic with lemon/lime.

Whiskey is actually supposed to be kind of bad for hair loss, so to be careful

Where did you read about that?

See things like this make me want to stop all together. Think I am going to try not drinking during the week and limit it to Friday and Saturday evenings.

Now that football is over the need to drink on Sundays should subside.

Sorry about the saints.

I think it’s worth trying for 2 weeks. I’ve definitely had a beer or 2 but not late at night and very sparingly.

Again, I loooooove drinking but results are undeniable.

Also, the hangovers are getting worse and worse. Even just a few beers and I feel sluggish the next day.

Anyway, in just a couple weeks I’ve noticed a huge change. I’ve lingered around 190 for the past two years (I’m 5’8 barefoot) and I’ve already cut down to 178 without changing anything else

God damned dude. That's some serious shedding

I drink beer.....a fair amount. I workout 5 days a week consisting 3 coached swims w/ a masters group and 2 bike rides of 30-50 miles which I have done consistently for 15 years or so but I still had a small gut. I'm 54 and have a semi-six pack again after cutting out 90% of sugar, cheese and butter about a year ago and using avocado or olive oil for anything I fry at home. I will still eat a pizza or fries or other crap on weekends but I try to only do it for only 1 meal.

Dude if you have to think this hard about it, you might just want to let it go.

Zero alcohol is a good baseline to operate from if you care about fitness.
