I'm pretty similar numbers to you. My numbers are: total 209, HDL 36, LDL 160, and trigs 64. LDL seems to be the only high one and HDL is low. PCP wanted to start me on statins right away and I told him to tap the brakes. With these numbers I feel there is something else going on and it's not the same broad brush he normally sees. I have an appointment with a cardiologist that hopefully has a better plan than throw meds at me without looking into anything.

This is probably an obvious one and I would assume your doctor would catch this, but just to make sure we're not missing the smoking gun - you aren't on any HRT are you? That could definitely cause the big LDL spike.

Any hormone imbalance is worth looking into, but if you're on HRT I'd say that is almost definitely the cause and would be tough to fix with diet/lifestyle alone.

Red yeast rice contains the same chemical as lovastatin, so you are in fact still taking a statin.

What are y'all thoughts on Ezetimibe? Less side effects compared to a statin and can lower LDL.

The meat isn’t the problem. Try intermittent fasting, eat in a 6 or 8 hour window. I’m carnivore and did this recently to drop last pounds. My total cholesterol dropped like 50 points.

Good to know. I no longer have hydration issues and my testosterone rebounded. I’m gonna have to do more research

Things like flax seed and almonds and some other stuff you can look up can lower cholesterol. And eating these things won’t make you gain weight.

You could snack on some almonds and I just add ground flax seed with blueberries to some yogurt.

Also it generally says in the chart that it raises your risk of a heart attack in 10 years. Not that you will necessarily die tomorrow or next month.

Your ldl is really high though, so try lowering it on your own but you will prob need meds if you can’t.

My overall cholesterol is high but my ldl is in the optimal range.

Alcohol consumption?

I asked my doc this. He says alcohol can actually raise your hdl.

Just asked ChatGPT.

quote:

Yes, moderate alcohol consumption can raise HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which is often referred to as the "good" cholesterol.

I haven’t drank at all this year, but was wondering if my past drinking had an effect.

The problem with the drinking is weight gain though.

If you have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol, the food intake likely will not make much difference. Been there, done that.

Quick story
I was trending high on the cholesterol and doc was wanting me to take statin. Wife kept sending me clips about diet: red rice yeast, cut sugar, lower carbs, intermittent fasting etc… and I did that. Numbers got a bit better and I avoided statins. Doctor kept prescribing. I wouldn’t take them. Eventually I switched doctors (wife advice). New doctor was supposed to be more holistic. New doc prescribed statins too but did a full work up before. Wanted to see if I had blockages.
Got results and yep- I had some blockage…. Not good.

I now take low dose statin.

Moral of story- lots of arm chair advisors. Lots of click bait online and social media. Some of the advice is fine but it’s overkill and they don’t know your whole story.

I think changes to diet is always good idea when it cuts out the harmful stuff. Sugar and processed food are bad.

Just be careful with the advice. It can drive you crazy

Thanks, yeah people keep telling me this and that and it all ends up being contradicting. What was course of action with blockage? Also how old are you?

When this all happened, I was early 50’s.
I remember the chaotic back and forth of info. It was frustrating.

To see that I had some blockage really got my attention. I don’t pretend to know all the answers But I suggest that you get a full work up to show if you have any current blockage which can help alleviate concerns or ramp up the need for medical attention.

I don’t want to dump on all advice but I just want to ask that you be careful with non medical advice.

I did a stress test and an echocardiogram. I did well on both. I’m not going to let a higher calcium score and a slightly higher overall cholesterol number dictate my life. I’m also not going to take a statin that affected my quality of life. Especially with the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc. I eat a mostly dirty carnivore diet because the diet the cardiologist has a lot of seed oils and processed carbs. I guess I’ll die early with a smile on my face

Maybe. Just monitor things. Blood tests are obviously helpful but if you can do a CT scan, it can be helpful to determine if your body is building up calcium in the arteries which can lead to a stroke or heart attack.
Suffering from a stroke can be a terrible way to go through life and it’s very burdensome on those around you.

That smile on your face could turn into a deep frown if not taken seriously

221 isn’t terrible.

Avoid high, sugary processed foods. Stick with fruits and vegetables for your carbs.

My dad has high cholesterol but his diet sucks and he’s been a smoker for decades.

My numbers are always sub 150 but my HDL levels always lag below the recommended range no matter what I do.

Total is 282 It’s just wild because I feel like I’m more health conscious than a lot of guys my age or younger. Wife eats healthy so there’s not a ton bad options at my house

Mine was at 324 back in December

I was drinking too much and eating like dog shite. Cut way back on the drinking and now I eat super clean and it’s down to 212 in 3 months. My ldl was 239 and now down to 140.

I eat very little sugar and low carbs now. I’ll eat wheat tortillas and one vs 3, I cup of brown rice vs 2 cups of white rice and zero junk food or sugary drinks. I only do the rice one maybe two days a week for 1 meal so not often.

I do eat the heart healthy oats 1 cup with blueberries, 1 1/4 cup egg whites, 1 whole egg for breakfast pretty much every morning. I work out a minimum of 4 days a week sometimes 5 if I have time.

What were your triglycerides?

Lipid panel issues can be a genetic disposition also. I know people who have to take statins and they train 5 days a week, eat healthy and not over weight. Crazy how it works.

On a side note , my lipid panel is basically average/ok except my triglycerides are high. He put me on atorvastatin and my body did NOT react well to it. To much bloating/swelling and heartburn(I never get heart burn). The minute I quit the statin, I went back to normal. I'm presently eating right(hunter/gatherers diet with lean meat and greens only)and getting 4 days a week at gym. Drinking alot of water too. Ive lost 3 lbs last week and down to 200lbs at 6ft 1'. Shooting for 195lbs.

I’m 37 and studies show these things can lower you ldl. Which you need.

quote:

Several studies have found that regular almond consumption (about 1–2 ounces or 28–56 grams per day) is associated with a modest but significant reduction in LDL cholesterol. They’re often included in heart-healthy diets like the Mediterranean diet.

Eliminate processed foods
Eliminate alot of sugar
Don't drink alcohol
Take omega 3

Watch it drop.

Also to it could be like you said hereditary. I know people in shape and eat clean and their triglycerides are high. If you ever have to take cholesterol meds watch the side effects of them and switch around till one doesnt cause weight gain, bloating and other sides effects like heartburn etc. I know 2 nurses and both told me that cholesterol meds are hit or miss and don't really help much, maybe 15% tops. They both say to clean up the diet. Take omega 3....
