Any other noticeable "side" benefits? (skin, sex life, healing times, etc.)

I went against conventional wisdom and everything i had learned after having diabetes nearly 20 years

Great job man. Keep up the fight. You saved your own life and gave your kids a huge gift to have their dad around.

Haha, great question!
So, whenever my doctor brings ups statins and my cholesterol being a problem I asked for a particle size test and a coronary calcium score- never orders it... Then I educate him on HDL to triglyceride ratio and remnant cholesterol. He's not happy but it's led him to do research and he has not fired me as a patient.
Not keto friendly at all, so when he criticizes me about my diet I remind him that he wanted me to have a high mortality and morbidity surgery, then we go our separate ways.

Conventional Wisdom taught by the ADA:
1) cholesterol is dangerous. a normal humans total cholesterol needs to be less than 200, so arbitrarily a diabetics cholesterol needs to be less than 160. I s*** you not there is no science to back that up they just figure since someone has diabetes it would benefit them to have a cholesterol 40 points lower.
2) eat at least 60 to 75 grams of carbs 3 times a day, and 3 15g snacks. Great idea for someone who cannot make insulin, why don't we have them inject insulin six separate times per day, surely that won't lead to wait gain? Once you think about it it's so obvious, yet I did this for 18 years.
3) ketones are dangerous for a diabetic. Having been dka in my life this was the hardest to get over for me. Even is a diabetic and a nurse I did not know the difference between ketosis and dka.
4) saturated fat and red meat are the devil and will surely cause me to have a heart attack.
Keep in mind I believed all this for years, I am not proud of this. There are several people on this board that often post you all are crazy for thinking you know more than a doctor, I do not claim to know more than a doctor but I will surely study, test, and think about anything that is passed off as absolute. Not to go all conspiracy theory, but my biggest advice I can give to anyone is to investigate things on their own. Condemnation without investigation =s ignorance.

Skin benefit is amazing oh, I used to have dry patchy eczema my legs, lower back, elbows. It's all gone now.
Sex, you can imagine being nearly 400 lb to 100++ lbs less, things get better, lol.
Not sure about healing time, but I have three kids under the age of 7 and I have really gotten sick in the last 2 years. No colds, no flu, no gastric bugs-my entire life with diabetes I would be lucky to go 3 to 6 months without getting sick or catching something, especially since I've had kids.
Between keto and intermittent fasting the biggest difference is mood / attitude / mental focus. It is amazing.

Good on you man. It's rough going against the grain, even though like you point out the grain can be nonsensical. But it is worth it when you can stand tall saying I did it!
If you like learning about those health nutrition things What I've Learned helped me understand the science behind a lot of it.

Doctors are not qualified to discuss nutrition. Theyre still going off 1980’s studiea that have been debunked for 20 years.

My doctor literally showed me the Food Pyramid and told me to eat more whole grains. He said my heart was going to give out eating that much fat. I can't wait to go see his old arse in 5 months.

It's weird how doctors became the go to lords on this stuff. They barely study it in med school. And then what they DO study is based off of tired, horribly biased non-science.
Congrats on seizing your own outcomes. Your family will be thanking you for years!

I see Jeff Hyde as my cardiologist and Gary Field as my endocrinologist and both are ok with my doing keto. They both like seeing the weight come off as it benefits all of my numbers.

BigScrub, I'll be honest, back when we had mixed insulin and you had to eat or die- the 60-75 gram meals with snacks were vital. But insulin and technology have changed, and the MDs forget to change the nutrition.
It is a sad broken system though :*(

I don't see Dr. Field, but he knows I do keto and has asked a few questions.
Glad you see people who support what you do!
