Afternoon good folks,
I am debating on signing up to complete my 1st ever half marathon. I'm currently running 3-4 days a week with a long run (4-6 miles) done on Saturday/Sunday. I've began running consistently about 4-5 months ago and currently have completed a 5k (33 min while pushing my 11 month old in stroller) and have signed up for multiple more throughout the fall. I'd have roughly 5 months to train however, with winter coming, my daily sessions may be altered. I live in south la and 1/2 marathon would take place in March.

You have a great base for starting half marathon training. Since long distance is new for you, don't worry too much about time. You just want to complete the race.

Hal Higdon's plans are great. I recommend starting with the Novice 1 plan.

Since you're 5 months out, you don't even need to worry about starting this plan for a bit. You can continue building your base, racing 5Ks, and feeling comfortable with running.

Winter's only going to make it easier!

You’re already running 6. My last run before a half I top out at 8.5 miles. You could easily do it.

Best time to run.

If you’re worried about finishing you should be fine.

You've done the hard part. Not sure which ecosystem you are in but both Coros and Garmin offer plenty of half marathon plans catered to your experience level. Those plans load the workout directly to your watch. There are also many fitness apps that have AI coaching the most popular being Runna. With 12-16 weeks of training you can easily run a half. Then the desire will begin to burn for the full. Best of luck in your journey.

Thank you for the feedback! I purchased a Garmin 265 a few months back and have loved it since day 1. I also have utilized the Nike Run App and felt that was a great resource as well. My biggest fear/concern is my mental game right now and getting started and knowing "oh snap, have to run 13 miles."

13 miles, long as it sounds, it pretty manageable with even minimal training. You’ll be great by March, just get a long run up to 10 or 11 miles in.

pro tip as a fatty that has run multiple halfs. find someone running your pace, preferably a good view, and just run behind them. #iregretnothing

I'm training for a half marathon (have been running for about 9 weeks now with my long run 6-8 miles). I just asked Google AI to make me a 16 week training plan with 4 days per week and preferred running days. It made a nice table, and I put all the runs on my calendar. I was using the Runna free trial and didn't want to fork up the money for the annual subscription. The AI plan basically mirrored what I was doing with the Runna app.

Keep it up - you’re doing great and you’ll be ready!

I’m doing my first half marathon later this year and I’m loosely following Hal Higdon’s Novice 2 plan.

Good luck!

I second the Hal Higdon recommendation for a training plan.

Do it. Have fun, but go all-in. Your life will get better.

I highly recommend a heart rate based program. Garmin actually has some good ones that you can program into your watch. Zone 2 runs are humbling and a pain in the arse at first but the long term benefits are worth the grind.
