Why have crowds become more belligerent and vocal at golf tournaments

What is with this never-ending movement of golf crowds yelling the dumbest shite you’ve ever heard immediately after someone hits?
I know it’s been bad for many years but it feels like every shot with a crowd present is permanently open-mic night. The soundtrack to tournament golf is a collection of fans trying to rise above the cacophony to get a rise out of their friends. We hear fewer roars and more disjointed shouts.
And now it goes well beyond that—we’re talking about golf crowds getting increasingly more belligerent (and, let’s face it, dumber) over the years.
You could hear these imbeciles giving crap to Matthew Fitzpatrick as he stepped to the 18th tee Sunday at TPC Sawgrass … because he plays for Europe in the Ryder Cup?
This is embarrassing behavior from a golf crowd. Since when has nationality mattered at a Tour event to the point where fans need to root for Americans?
Sure, I guess we can start chanting U-S-A at Young. It’s a little weird but it’s fine.
Of course, it’s reasonable for the crowd to favor one player over the other.
But booing a guy as he steps up to hit one of the most important tee shots of his life?

Leading up to the Ryder Cup, the media kept pumping the fans as some great X factor for Team USA. That emboldened some of the morons in the New York/New Jersey area to act like damn fools.
Also, alcohol.
Also, alcohol.

The game has grown a lot since 2020/COVID. There are a lot of people playing golf and attending golf tournaments that have no grasp of the overall history and etiquette of the game. You also have a lot of young people trying to get attention for social media clout/currency.

I cannot stand it, it very much make me not want to watch golf on TV. If you ever get a chance, watch the DP World Tour, Asian Tour, etc and this is not a thing on those tours. It seems like it's just the PGA tour that this is a problem, since the days of "Bababooey" which is when I can first recall this happening. I always wondered why the PGA Tour or the TV network doesn't just mute this from happening, they can do it in their TV trucks.

Social media, enhanced attention seeking behavior, and seeking likes.
I’ll never understand seeing guys in the background when someone is hitting and they have their phone up filming it. Are you really going to go home and watch that? Why not just watch and enjoy it in real time? Nobody you text, tweet, twirk this to is going to watch it or cares where you’re at.
With that said, I did chuckle the one time Dechambeau piped one and some let out a “GIVE ME BACK MY SON!!!!!”

Watching the DP World Tour playing in Western Europe while eating a weekend breakfast and sipping coffee is delightful.
An oasis from the welcomed invasion going on over there.

Because it’s Philadelphia and their fans are embarrassingly tacky.

Also when a ball goes outside the ropes and grown arse men racing and shuffling feet to go stand and look down at the ball. They’re going to back you off and put ropes back up bro.
Philly fans are embarrassingly similar to LSU fans. Let’s face it.

It seems ti me that when I go to the Zurich the crowd has been more appropriate the last few years. I suspect that the white Oakley, lifted truck, Michelob Ultra crowd plays more golf the last 20 years and they've trashed it up more.

Good lord these people are garbage.

Have marshaled at the Zurich for a good while. The amount of obnoxious “fans” has increased tremendously since Covid. The ones following Rory in 25 were awful. Thankfully this year it was much better. Ignorance and alcohol are a bad combo.

This is why many of the top players left for LIV. Better class of attendees at LIV events

It's the Howard Stern-izationing of society. You have NY/NJ/Philly area meatheads wanting to shout the 2026 version of, "Bababooey!"

I don’t get the people in this thread saying it’s social media’s fault. Facebook has been around for over 20 years and instagram has been around for almost 15 years now. It’s not some new phenomenon.

It's not just golf, it's the entire country. We have no morals at all anymore. I used to think the 90/10 rule was 90% of the people were good people. I was wrong, 90% are complete assholes.

A whole generation of kids that were never disciplined for acting out are now young adults

Let the Masters run all majors and you won’t see these idiots. You will have better controlled grounds, better manners and a real consequence to bad behavior. You behave badly you get ejected and will lose the privilege to attend every again. I been fortunate to attend all the majors and the more you open it up to the public the worse it gets! At the Us Open and PGA anybody can get a ticket and it shows…British usually is well controlled depends on which of the courses is hosting. Have only been at St Andrews and that is the birthplace of Golf… so they treat it like Augusta!
