Which iron - 3, 5, 7 or 9?

What is the best iron to start with (driving range)? I've heard a 3, 5 or 7 iron.

Tom Watson says 3 iron, but he's also maybe the best iron player of all time.

When I played, I started with the PW and worked my way up to the driver alternating clubs after hitting roughly five balls with each club.

I start with a 7 or a 9. I usually like to hit my wedges after my driver and fairway woods on the range because I want to have enough energy to put on good swings for those clubs.

Every player has different opinions, I feel more comfortable starting with a wedge just to get loose
Watched something with Tiger woods and he started with a wedge and just hit 10 or so balls with absolutely no mechanics, no thoughts, just swung easy..
Then he would start aiming for targets and all

Advice I’ve always taken is that you work shorter and up so wedges first, but I also suck so there’s that.

I'm just the opposite. I start w/Driver, then work myself down. Not sure why, but seems to work for me. Easier to get my rhythm with longer clubs, I guess...

For amateurs, wedge backwards. I usually go 54*, 7 or 8, 4, driver. I don’t like wasting my good swings on the range

This.
I stretch real good, hit a few wedges, a few 7 iron, 2 drives and go.

I usually start with 54° hitting 50-75% shots to make sure I get my tempo down since that’s my biggest issue. No reason to make full swings if I don’t have that down first. Then I go to 8 iron hitting smooth. Then bump all the way up to 4 to work on shot shapes and feel. If I can control that club I feel good about anything. I’ll then hit a few drivers while I’m really warm. Then I go back to the 54 or even 60 to get that feel for going from driver to wedge while I’m nice and warm. Hit full and half shots with those. If I don’t like how I hit my 8 or 4 I’ll go back to those to finish.
ETA: I really like starting and finishing with a wedge at 50-75% because that’s what I struggle with most and need to focus most of my time on. I’ve actually had some injuries lately and have been able to work on those pitches and short game only and it’s come a long way.

I start with a 56 or 52, slap the first couple just to wake up the swing muscles, then hit a few 50% and up to full. Work my way up to driver, going through some combo of short iron, long iron, either 3w or 3h, then driver. 6-10 balls per club, with maybe 2-3 of those being 50-75% swings.

I like that. Will do this next time out.

With the lengthening of clubs and the strong lofts of today, I would suggest working with an 8 iron might be the most useful for timing, balance, and rhythm.
That statement would be for someone learning a basic swing.
For an experienced player warming up, start with a sand wedge, then 8 iron, then hybrid, then fairway wood, then driver.
Hit enough to get loose and free. Then head to putting green and roll some 20 footers to get pace. Then makes some putts to see it go into the hole.

The goat ranches I often play don't even have a range.
Two off the first tee, baw.
