I've never had formal lessons but I play with a guy whose low index was +3.8 at one point so I trust what he says. I was having trouble hooking my irons for a while. I was still hitting the ball squarely but it would always hook. He watched me hit a few and could see I wasn't turning my lower half hardly at all and I was swinging virtually all arms.

He had me line up as if I was hitting the ball about 50 yards left of the center of the fairway and told me, "Now I want you to hit this in the middle of the fairway". Basically forced me to rotate my hips a ridiculous amount (in my head, at least) and I'll be damned if I didn't hit it directly down the middle.

eta: another one that isn't necessarily some earth-shattering development but I get in major funks when I get quick transitioning into my downswing and don't have that pause at the top. I have to feel like it's almost an awkward amount of time pausing at the top of backswing before beginning my downswing and that helps me get back on track a lot of times as well.

Never bet with an old guy who has a deep tan, squinty eyes, and a 1-iron in his bag.

Play with the swing you have, not the swing you want.

There’s a teaching pro on the Northshore that says “you gotta frick the donkey” it’s about clearing your hips ahead of your arms and pushing up from the ground with your left foot through impact . If you’ve got the lefts, it’ll fix you right up. Almost impossible to hook it if you do this right

So you’re saying I should take the 1-iron out?

As a younger golfer, I was told if you’re gonna miss, miss fast. I also had etiquette drilled into me at a young age.

Some of the bullshite I see on the golf course from dumbasses makes me crazy.

Don’t try to steer the golf club. Swing as hard as you want as long as you can keep your balance.

Stay balanced on your feet. Don't put weight on your toes. I used to do that. Balance balance balance.

Like someone else said, take the club back slower, and I'll add, don't break your wrists at takeaway.

Head down through the swing. Easy to pick up your head.

Forward arm straight.

Learn the correct grip.

Learn how to adjust your swing during a round. Learn how techniques change your swing and hitting.

Have a routine. Don't make it some long arse routine though. I play with two guys that take forever to hit the ball.

REPAIR BALL MARKS ON THE GREENS.

Learn how to hit the ball low to get out of trouble.

DO NOT OVERSWING. Much more important to make good contact.

When you get into trouble, just get out of trouble.

I really wish I’d taken that advice at times.

Just couldn’t help trying the hero shot

Per Jack Nicklaus’ book “Golf My Way” . . .

“If you have to swing hard, then you have the wrong club in your hands.”
