My neighbor played on the PGA Tour

I was decent in high school. I played a lot and took lessons from an early age. I could shoot in the 80's so after football my Junior year I tried out for the golf team. Saying I was out of my league is a major understatement. Dudes I actually started playing golf with from early grade school were now studs. I think all but 1 of the guys on the team went on to play golf in college. All of these dudes literally were prodigies that spent way more time golfing and practicing than I could imagine. That team and the next 2 were probably one of the strongest high school golf teams to play in the state for several years. One went on to LSU and became an All-American getting on the mini-tours after LSU, won a few times, then got on the PGA tour. He even won a PGA tournament and got into the Masters. He is pretty much regarded as the best player to ever come out of Monroe and at the end of the day that got him one PGA tour win. That is how strong the PGA tour is.

I also duck hunt down here on the Eastside of Houston and one of my hunting buddies is good friends with Shawn Stefini who plays out of Mont Belvieu. I think he played at Lamar and was on the PGA tour for a few years. We have played at his home course in Mont Belvieu a couple of times and watching how precise he is by literally dropping shots like darts on the fairway where the mere mortal golfer prays to just find the proper side of the fairway or not to go OB is literally what separates the best from the rest. With that being said, it takes an obscene amount talent coupled with unlimited resources and time just to be pretty well average on tour.

Not a chance for me. I was past my prime when I started playing golf but I know I would not have been able to do it.

I played mini tour level golf including some PGA Tour events. The answer is no. Either you have the God-given talent (work ethic isn’t enough) or you do not.

Why is golf the only sport this argument comes up
Because you can be short, fat, skinny, slow, and not all that strong and still be a pro

No other mainstream sport can really say that

The answer here is obviously going to be no for almost all people. But is the question you are given these resources at 8 or now?

But more people would have a chance in golf than football, basketball, etc etc because the size and physical limitation isn’t there

A very good athlete that is 5’10” 170 pounds the answer is 100% no for pretty much every major sport except golf. That’s why this gets brought up. Rickie, JT, Rory had a 0.0% to be pros in any major sport besides golf

Always insightful

Steph curry, amendola, smoltz etc at 8 given unlimited resources and a full focus on golf 99% becomes pro

Steph curry with unlimited resources and a full focus on golf now doesn’t

Ok for me personally I doubt I become pro. High level college 100%, after that unlikely pro but a chance for sure, small, but at least a chance. That’s starting at 8 with all the resources and such

Now I would get to a plus handicap but no shot in hell at pro. None. Zero

Yes I could have. I played D1 college golf. Was a 3 time AJGA all American. I injured my L3 vertebrae as a senior and never was able to fully heal before I left school and was forced to make money in the real world. Given all the time and money after leaving school I believe I would have got there. I played against and beat many current and former pros.

Personal injury is the biggest thing in that equation for me

That’s a very impressive amateur golf resume.

Buy a copy of Paper Tiger by Tom Coyne. He tried basically exactly what you’re asking. Great writer.

Did you have surgery? L5-L6 for me, sucked, still does when a cold front comes through. Surgery helped tremendously.

Right, but he did it as an adult and went from a 15 handicap to a plus

You give then the same resources and parents that put him solely in golf at 8 and he stands a chance

Because golf is one of the only sports where an amateur CAN do something the absolute best ever would do.

An amateur CAN hit a shot to within 3 feet from 125 out.

An amateur CAN sink a 23 footer for birdie.

An amateur CAN stripe a drive 295+ in the middle of the fairway.

A guy sitting on his couch isn’t making a TFL on Derrick Henry, getting a hit off an mlb pitcher or draining a 3 in an NBA player’s face.

I think Larry Nelson is the only major winner to take up golf after his teens. He started at 21. No idea on regular tour wins or even cards.

Poulter has a great story. He played early but was never better than a 4 handicap until he started playing in competitions in his 20s.
