I think a lot of the answers in this thread are dishonest, or more likely when these guys are having a bad round they stop keeping score and start playing a “practice round”
I know because I do the same thing sometimes
It’s OK guys we are amateurs here, we are going to blow up every now and then!
When I shot my 100 5 months ago I shot 79, went out the next day and played the same course and shot 102

Most single digit cappers pick up after reaching their max score allowed for handicap purposes - net double bogey. That eliminates the HUGE score and makes it almost impossible to not break 100.

I honestly think you all should speak for yourselves. Now, I’m not immune to almost having a nervous breakdown on a course. I’ve been playing for a long time and played competitively for years. Still do. The one thing you learn as you progress in this game is to minimize damage. If you keep a legit handicap you don’t pickup. You allow your handicap to be adjusted after you enter your score hole by hole. I’m 2.4 index. I know guys who aren’t as good as i am that wouldn’t shoot 100.

I’m an 8.3. My GHIN card has a 92 and two 93s.
My last 100+ round was at Whistling Straits in 2016. A smooth 103 after birding the first hole.

Came close the last two (2) times I played the Bluffs. Posted a 99 and a 97 as a 9 handicap.

I'm not even really sure, maybe 2003

If you haven't shot over 80 in awhile then you're not a 5, maybe a 2 or 3.
I've been sub-5 for several years, shot over 90 at Spyglass couple years ago. But I typically drive it straight and my short game is decent, makes it tough to go too high.

8 handicap here. Typical round between 74-82. Think my high round last 2 years is 85. Cant remember the last time I shot over 90. I hit a lot of fairways and approach shots are always solid never awful. My chipping just sucks. If I would work on my chipping I could get down to a 4 or 5 rather quick but I just never practice it. Last round I played I hit 11 fairways and 10 greens and shot 77. I went 2/8 scrambling and none of them would be considered hard up and downs.

The course I play is 138 slope and 72.6 course rating. What are the ratings and slopes you guys are playing? I average 84.9. Last 20rounds between 75-92. The 75 was senior tee. The 92 was bad putting. If my range was 74-82 I would be less than 5 index.
My index is 7.8, but from the whites at home I get 10 strokes. Whites are 6400. Lots of bunkers and hazards and OB on every hole. When I travel, it seems most slope ratings are in the 120s. I don’t really shoot consistently “lower” on an “easier” course.
I rarely break 80. I make the turn in 38 or 39 quite often or come in low on the back, but can’t seem to put 38 with a 39.

I see something along these lines posted a lot on this board. If you are an eight handicap and your typical round is 74-82 you must play an incredibly easy course or it’s par is 68.
My index is currently 7.4, so lower than you, my last 10 rounds AVERAGE is 82.4 with a low of 78 and a high of 86
I feel like I’m always the guy calling people out, I don’t mean to be that guy, but if you are really an 8 handicap there is no way your highest score in the last two years is 85. If you averaged an 85 on a standard par 72 course with a rating at 72, you wouldn’t be much higher than an 8 handicap

quote:Where do you get the 8 handicap from? GHIN or some other objective system? Because you aren’t an 8 handicap. More like a 3.

Or is 8 just your “money-game” handicap?

Yeah i agree. I’m not sure some people on here keep legit usga handicaps. I’m a 2.4 index. I fired a smooth 88 about a month ago and almost had a meltdown on the course. I shoot in the mid to high 70s pretty consistently but to say someone typically shoots 74-82 isn’t a 5. Pending slope of course in a 4-6. I play the tips.

quote:True, but when people generally say “I’m a ___ handicap”, they’re talking about their index, not their handicap on a particular course from particular tees.

Majority of scores are on course rating of 70. I’m on GHIN. Actually I’m currently a 7.1. I said 8 Bc that’s where I’m usually at.
Edit- generally play Beaver Creek from the 1 ups with the old man.

What’s your average score on GHIN? Genuinely curious. Because your handicap is usually 3 less than your average.

78.3. I had a stretch the last month where I went:

80

Every now and then a 74/75 will pop up as well as a 82/83.
