Played my first actual tournament, it did not go great

I was actually hitting the ball OK, but I was way too conservative and clearly more nervous than I thought because I completely flubbed several short wedge shots that I usually hit well and 3 putted 3 times. Needless to say my score was about 15 strokes higher than on a normal day.
A good example of my overconservatism looking back is on a par five that I get on in 2 all the time, I had 200 yards and I needed to carry the ball at about 185 over a Sandtrap. I’ve hit that shot with a five iron on multiple occasions on that exact total. Well this time I decided to lay up with a nine iron, and then proceeded the flop a wedge about 10 feet, and hit my next wedge 30 feet from the hole, and then three putt for double bogey... If I just would’ve played my normal aggressive game and gone for it in 2 who knows what would’ve happened...
What’s crazy is I have played pretty high-level competition in other sports before so I didn’t think that the moment would really get to me, and I didn’t feel all that nervous while playing either but clearly I was.
Overall it was an awesome learning experience though and I’m excited to do it again soon! I feel positive about the way I was hitting the golf ball, it showed me that I could definitely compete in these amateur events if I can just get my nerves and check and be more confident with what I can do.
Anybody else got any first time tournament stories? I imagine a lot of people are like me the first time they play one.

That's tough. Definitely way too conservative in my view. If water or OB isn't really in play then I would always lean to go for it in two if it's a possibility. Even if you end up with a buried lie in a bunker you should be able to chunk it out and two putt for par.

For sure, I did stuff like that a few times too, just didn’t trust myself, lesson learned

If people are honest very few of their first tournaments went well (mine was a shoot show if the way I played was the only determining factor). Just keep playing they are a lot of fun.

First tournament I played in was a state am qualifier. Started playing golf in college (played some growing up, but not much), and had about 2 years of golf under my belt before teeing it up. Not a lot of golf, in the grand scheme of things.
Skulled the tee ball and second shot on one. Ultimately ended up with 3 three putts on the front. Went out in 42, but thought 81-82 would qualify. Was focused on having a good back until I realized the first 4 scores posted when I made the turn were all sub par. Figured at that point, I'd have to go low to qualify. I tried to drive every par four, and went for it on every par five, regardless of risk. Driver off the deck, absolutely, I've got this shot. Shot in the 50s on the back. Was truly embarrassing. Just didn't have the composure to focus and just play solid golf.

It took me a long time to be able to play in the local dogfight. I thought I was ready for my first AM tour event, wrong! I played like shite in all 3 of my starts. It’s the same as you described. Tournament golf is a different animal. It will get better

First tournament I played in high school when I was an 8th grader. Had to DQ myself on hole 16 because I had lost every ball in my bag. Congrats on just finishing!

Played in the BREC BR Open last year. I was pretty nervous on the 1st tee and actually smoked a drive dead center of the fairway and felt much better. Ended up flying the flag into the back bunker and missed the par putt. Then I missed the tap in (not used to putting everything out) for a double bogey 6. Shot a 50 on the front nine and considered a WD. Decided to stick it out and shot 40 on the back, which at least made me feel a little better. Planning on playing the BR Open again this month at Beaver. I am hoping that experience helps me out a little and gives me a better chance to qualify.
These little non-pressure tournaments makes me realize just how mentally tough the pros must be. I cannot imagine the pressure on a tournament when that amount of money is on the line.

It takes a few tournaments but it will become basically the same as a normal round at some point.
It's a lot different than other sports since you're out on your own on an island. You can't pass the ball or take your nerves out on a receiver. That's what makes it tough and rewarding.

Some of you guys are so full of shite.
Call it a short par 5 and you hit your drive 270 yards. You hit a 5 iron 200 yards but you are scared shitless of a bunker so you lay up.

???? I don’t feel like hitting a drive 280 and carrying a 5 iron 185 yards is that impressive?
It would be impressive if I could consistently hit it straight and accurate

This year’s state am qualifier was my first real tournament and I played better than expected. My group helped. Two young kids who didn’t know the course as well as me so I talked them through it a little. That honestly kept my focus and nerves in check. All 3 of us qualified.

Come to LaTour and show us how it’s done big boy.

You better be careful with that. Could easily cross into giving advice

LA AM Southern Trace either '15/16
Shot 70 in the money practice round Thurs with two friends
Shot 81 in R1 (-1 through 5)
Shot 79 in R2
MC
What happened to me was a lack of confidence in the swing, got swirly and lost it. Overly aggressive when I should have been conservative and vice versa.
My golf coach had one rule when playing, the first shot you think of is the one you go with. Its the one your mind has you prepped for (barring significant changes to the situation wind, lie, stance, distance, etc.) Keep that in mind for your next round. Play to your strengths

I never claimed I was a great golfer. I’m a high handicap and would come play the tournament at La Tour if I wasn’t committed to another event that weekend.
I find it funny that someone who routinely is on the green in two on a par five is laying up because of a trap.

We talked about that. No talk about club selection or where anyone should hit it. Basically, stuck to hole shape and green location and sometimes distances to points. It was just a good group.

Keep at it. Tournament golf really sharpens your game and mental toughness if you play it enough.
Then your next steps will be up the food chain. Local fun tourneys to city stuff to state am stuff and so forth. Probably the biggest eye opener I ever had in tournament golf was when I stepped up from playing state-level junior events and the like to AJGA. I got absolutely fricking smoked in my first AJGA event.

I don't think what you did was bad and certainly wouldn't take issue to it but be careful the more tournaments you play. You had a good group this time but one day you will run across a guy who will hear you say the first thing that could be "advice" and he will try to get you DQ'd. Some people are just dicks.
