Played peninsula in gulf shores today. Great track. Fairways are like carpet. Nice greens. $150 green fee. That’s fine. It’s a proper track.
Checking in…”would you like range balls?”
“Yes. Wait, what?”
You’re charging me for range balls? Are you f&@king kidding me?!?
I let them hear about it. No one there seemed too happy about. Said they are under new ownership and this is the corporate policy.
I understand the business principle of don’t give away what you can sell, but this just felt dirty.

Peninsula golf course was sold about a year ago. The new management has pissed off a lot of the homeowners in the hood. Management told homeowners they will be trespassing if caught walking on the cart paths or fishing in the golf course ponds. The Peninsula Residents Only facebook page posts about the new management has been interesting

Very simple for management to just increase the greens fee to $160 and include range balls for everyone. The fact that they can't figure that out doesn't bode well for them long term.

There are only so many range spots at many places..charging a few bucks for a bag of balls keeps people from showing up hours before a tee time blocking all the spots hitting 100+ balls and I can’t get a quick warm up before teeing off

Seems to have become common at many nice courses in the $90-150 range along with cart fees

Yeah, I said the same thing last time I played there too. We noticed quite a few things they've "cut back" just since last fall since the sale, then re-sale.

Charging for pre-round range balls when someone is spending $150 is sleezy.

I wouldn’t want that.

RTJ has a free range ball anytime option in their membership, but it’s about $600 more. I didn’t get it at Capital Hill because they have 3 practice greens I can use to warm up with that aren’t part of the range.

It’s low tier stuff. Embarrassing really..

Very true, but when the beancounters run the company they want to see the P&L for all aspects of the business and not see range balls as a cost support to the course. My experience is companies who practice this ultimately decline or fail. Sounds like Peninsula will be no different.

That's the one thing that grinds my gears about and halfway decent course with green fee above 75 bucks... A small bucket of range balls at very least should be included...

Peninsula has a huge range and no need to restrict access

Makes me happy now that my group skipped out on Peninsula this year and just did 2 rounds at Kiva.

played both early in the summer. actually enjoyed Peninsula more, but agree that the range ball thing was busch league. the overall experience is very nice - paying for range balls was surprising.

Played peninsula and kiva
Both are in great shape
Kiva a little cheaper
Had to hit off of mats at kiva range, so both had an issue there.
Service at both great.
Drinks at kiva 50% higher…$9 for a high noon!
I’ll be back to both, but the range ball fee obviously just rubbed me the wrong way
