The PGA Tour’s best coverage is on ESPN (if we exclude the Masters).

One of the Tour’s big problems is they’re fine just letting the coverage stay as is, and it’s brutal to watch for fans sometimes.

Hell, I don’t think most folks would even give a shite about this event if the PGA wasn’t crowing about it nonstop.

5 of the 8 events this season are AFTER the PGA Tour season finishes.

Obviously, if this league grows and draws more elite players, they will eventually hold more tournaments. That's the goal for LIV by 2024. And certainly there would be more scheduling conflicts between the two leagues at that point.

I think the PGA Tour rushed all of this, and all they've done is help grow the recognition and popularity of LIV.

What woukd one think is good?

Memorial got an average of 1.02 million for its Thursday coverage

PGA tournaments hover around 1 million for opening rounds and 1.5-2 million average viewers for final rounds

Clearly, the streaming only hurts LIV, but for now, that’s kinda part of it. That’s the bed they have to lie in

Here is worth a discussion

Obviously pure golf fans like ourselves want to purely see shots. But for ratings purposes, they aren’t worried about us. They are getting our viewing no matter what

Do casual people like the stupid fricking commentary? And the pomp and circumstance bullshite they do? I have no idea but I can’t imagine they don’t have interest groups telling them these things

"the bulk of it" is pretty vague

Last known they paid at least 60% of purses, and it's likely higher now given the inflation in TV revenue. Given the # of events and the total size of the PGA purses, I don't have any problem believing the Tour pays in the $300 - 400M range in purses. Total comprehensive earnings are publicly known to be in the $840M range, of which the Tour funds the vast majority. Add in some ancillary, non-competitive compensation on the income statement, and I have no problem buying that they are in the $850M range.

the assumption that they pay 850M to the players seem incorrect

If you have a more accurate number, then by all means, let's see it. It's probably about as bullshite as Mickelson's "$20B in digital assets" nonsense he pushed recently.

This, this was good. a lot of people watched it.

and its on Youtube, so even more people can still watch it who couldnt watch it live. It has 323K views right now. This was a successful first round, get over it.

It doesn’t get to be successful just because you deem it so

What is a benchmark to compare it to? Only one I have is a pga Thursday coverage, which averages 1 million viewers

So if you deem what seems like a 99k average to 1 million as successful, that’s your perogative, , but you the message board posters doesn’t have much weight there

I’ll wait to see what someone that reviews ratings says

1. Comparing the first LIV event to a well-established tournament hosted by one of the all-time great golfers is stupid

2. There are 3 locations to stream the event. YouTube, Twitter, and their website.

3. 99k is the amount of ACTIVE streamers at the end of the day’s coverage on one platform. Unique viewers would be much higher.

It’s a very solid start considering. Next week’s numbers will tell the story of the longevity. If LIV continues to peel off high level golfers, it won’t take much for the PGA tour to either change their stance or go under.

According to fricking what? You?

I haven’t given an opinion yet whether or not it was good because we have zero data yet or comparison done by people who do these things

You keep trying to compare it to the PGA numbers, its not a fricking comparison. only an idiot would think, or try to argue, that they would match or best the PGA numbers in round 1 of their very fist event. I'll say it again....FOR A FIRST ROUND OF A NEW EVENT this was a good showing, people watched and there was interest. The viewing numbers only grew throughout the morning and stayed high. Not to mention people watching on their website and on Facebook. Im sorry this didnt fall flat on its face like you were expecting it to, maybe go get drunk or something.

And you are randomly saying it did well based on numbers you see on YouTube. You have no idea of this was or wasn’t considered a success

You have no idea what network execs would want to see from a streaming only event. None. Yet you are deeming it a success.

I am saying simply as someone that isn’t connected to what numbers should hope to be only has other golf events to go by as a metric

Do you not see your blatant hypocrisy? I have stated I THINK this will not do well viewing

But at this point there is no way at all random people on a message board can say this was or wasn’t successful

Your opinion holds as much weight as RedHawk coming in and saying “those numbers are awful”

And that weight is zero

Maybe not all the way under, but it could become the minor leagues really quick.

The PGA Tour makes money from ticket sales, TV deals, merchandise, and sponsors. You take away the most exciting players in the world and leave a vacuum, and it’s over quicker than most would think.

DJ, Phil, Bryson, and Rickie Fowler were four of the biggest draws the PGA Tour had.

At this point, Rory, JT, Spieth, Koepka, and Rahm are really the only star power the tour still has. Maybe Matsuyama if you factor in the international audience. I could easily see Koepka, Rahm, and Matsuyama joining LIV as well.

This feels like a PGA event. Golf is golf, I guess. The PGA is going to become so petulant that folks are going to start resenting them. Hell, I don’t think most folks would even give a shite about this event if the PGA wasn’t crowing about it nonstop.

The PGA Tour gave LIV all the free marketing it needed.

I’m interested in seeing where the viewers are from.

It doesn’t mean a whole lot to me if 30% of the viewers are from Laos or some shite.

You think Dj pulls more eyeballs than scheffler, smith, Morikowa, Cantlay, burns, zalatoris, hovland, Xander etc etc

DJ has had a great career, but his good golf is the only thing about him. He doesn’t have any charm that brings people to him. Those great golfers I listed above do just as much as DJ

Phil and Bryson are the only “star power” LIV has right now in terms of people that bring eyes besides their golf play
