Do you pay for range balls or just hit the leftovers from other golfers? I saw a fella today hit his “small” bucket, then proceed to every single leftover range ball on the practice tee (Two large buckets worth easy). Is there a proper etiquette to be followed or are they free game?

I hit what I pay for. Sometimes I won't finish a bucket and i'll tell whoever is hitting next to me that they're welcome to it.

If a similar offer is not made to me I dont hit someone else's balls.

I know they arent using them, it just feels wrong?

Pretty much fair game - if you don't hit them, someone else will.

Now hitting every single leftover is a bit much, and I wouldn't hit them unless I paid for some myself.

If there's a small loose pile I'll smash a few of those for fun or to get a different viewing perspective on the range.

I’m sure they club wants you to hit them. Someone would have to go scoop up all the leftover balls on the range on top of picking them in the open field. Sometimes i don’t care to hit all of my practice balls but I’m not too good to go hit leftover balls if i want more. Maybe i don’t have etiquette but, i don’t see the issue

I don’t mind hitting someone’s leftovers, but only if I’ve already paid my own bucket.

I’ve seen people walk straight to the range and just hit the balls laying out there. At least give the course a little business before you take the free balls

The worst is the guy that gets an empty bucket and goes to the chipping green and gets himself a free bucket a balls.

"The worst is the guy that gets an empty bucket and goes to the chipping green and gets himself a free bucket a balls. "

I saw this a couple of weeks ago at Santa Maria. A guy picked up the empty basket near me, proceeded to go to the practice area and picked up a half of bucket. Then after hitting that, I noticed he was picking up balls on the chipping green. I looked at him then kept hitting balls. My tees were going straight back when hitting off of the mat and I would pick them up later. The guy next to me started laughing and when I looked at him, he pointed to the ground and said that the guy had picked up my tees while I was hitting.

I see no issue with hitting < 10 balls before playing to get loose if they are sitting there and don't feel like full warm up.

Going to each pile and cleaning up is a bit much. Kind of like cleaning out all the food samples at Costco or something.

How dare you. My 4 year old thinks that’s why Costco exists

Cypress Lakes has a $140 for the year option that lets you hit as many buckets as you want. I usually get a small bucket before I play but since I pay for the year I don't think much of hitting leftovers. However, more times than not when I walk out with my bucket there is usually more balls leftover than what I have in my bucket.

Cypress Lakes

When I read this, I thought "this guy plays my home course". Then I realized that I didn't even know which course I was thinking of. I grew up on Cypress Lakes (Ormond) and now I live in Cypress, TX where my nearest course is called Cypress Lakes.

I’ve hit a few leftover balls in my time but I am not going to the range looking to do so

Whatever is left is fair game, It’s take a penny leave a penny in my mind. Some times my eyes too big for my stomach with a jumbo so I’ll leave balls Or I just don’t have enough time before my t time

At the club, the range balls are “free”.

I usually just get a small bucket at other places IF they are not “free”.

I hit about 2 dozen full shots in a warm up session.

If I found myself wishing I had more balls than I bought, sure I would hit the surplus.

If you are paying over 50 bucks green fees, I say fair game.

They have to be picked up anyway. They would normally make a bunch on me with the food and beverage believe me.

I miss the 19th hole gatherings !!!!!

I let people around me know when i leave that im done. I have had people do the same. i have taken a couple/three balls that didnt make it 5 ft past the rope ( when i didn't like the way i finished my practice/warm up..and no one is being interrupted in their swing) but...i don't recall hitting a pile of balls just left there.

If you finish your bucket and hit a few more stragglers laying around, no foul. If you show up and just hit a few laying around instead of getting a bucket, just your lucky day and you may have done enough for the golf gods to give you a bad break or two. If you pick up balls from the chipping green to hit on the range, frick you and I hope there's a hornet in every hole you reach in.

As others have stated. Fair game.

I leave my extra's behind if I dont finish them. We're talking range balls here.

What about scooping up all the balls from the chipping green right before it gets dark?
