If you are a single or twosome behind a foursome at a public course on the weekend, and they are playing at or under a 4 hour pace, you should have zero expectation to be let though. Zero.
This brings up another question. Which group is worse?
- a foursome who all suck, take mulligans every hole, play extremely slow, and never let anyone play through because they don’t know etiquette
- A foursome of old men who play really slow and refuse let anyone through out of some sort of sense pride or something.

The old men are definitely worse. The guys that don't know better can be fixed. The old men are just being rude.

I tend to agree.
The two worst groups on the golf course are the old guys who won’t let anyone through.
The opposite group is just as bad, the old guys who play really early in the morning who think they own the course, they warm up on the part of the driving range that is closed drive their carts onto the green and on the edge of bunkers, and seem to think golf is a race to be won. Everyone likes fast pace of play but these guys act like chipping and putting aren’t a part of the game, once the ball is within 50ft of the hole it’s time to scoop it and move on, don’t you dare try and read that 20ft birdie putt or they’ll start hitting into you.

Not sure how the GPS works as far as keeping pace, but most carts tell you if you are ahead or behind. Seems the pro shop could tell who is holding the course up. Got a group that plays every Wednesday somewhere. We were playing Kosati and all the groups in our bunch were foursomes. My group was the last to tee off. We were going along, keeping pace with the group ahead of us when a twosome catches us. I hate to wait but I really hate to hold up people behind. So, we let em through. Two holes later, same thing. We go from being ahead on our round to behind by a few minutes. A few holes later the marshal comes by and tells us to quicken our pace. We obliged, but we aint catching the twosomes ahead of us. Get to number 8, and here comes the marshal again but this time a little more upset about not keeping up with the group ahead. We tell the a-hole marshal that if the proshop wouldn't have sent out two twosomes behind us, this wouldn't have happened. We asked the marshal who his boss was because he was gonna get an earful from us about the marshall and the bullshite twosomes.

Something doesn't add up here. If you are keeping pace with the foursome ahead of you, there's no reason to let the twosome through. If you did let them through, you still shouldn't be too far behind them because they have another foursome ahead of you. This is essentially the same exact hypothetical I raised earlier in this thread. You thought you were being nice, but the twosomes probably aren't gaining much ground after playing through, and now your round is messed up.
This is the tough spot with a marshal. This thread is calling for more attentive marshalls, but then you end up with assholes like you mentioned. I really think it's more on the starter and clubhouse. Preventing the problem before it starts is a better solution than trying to fix it with marshals.

My FIL is definitely not in this group, but it is a bit humorous that he's an avid golfer that probably spends 20-30 hours a week playing or practicing, but when I play with him he's putting MAYBE 18 times in a round.
I'll have a 6 footer for par and he'll try to convince me to just pick up

Yeah, it's never made much sense to me either. I guess it's easier to scoop up a ball with the back of your putter rather than bending over just in case you make it. Still, it seems these retirees have no place else to be. Why rush getting off the course?

I always assume they’re trying to finish their round and get home before their wives wake up at 9am

That 11am naptime.

Didn’t see this complaint mentioned so I’ll add it: playing from the tips. I’ve seen more young bucks playing from the tips that have no business playing them than I should’ve. I don’t know if it’s machismo or they’re trying to impress the cart girl, but players need to club themselves and play the tees suitable for their game. If you can’t drive it that far, play the whites or golds. This is applicable to oldsters too. I’ve seen a few fossils out there who just couldn’t seem to accept that their days as bombers were long over. Move up gramps!
To clarify, I don’t mean old
Men playing from the tips. That’s the kids. I mean old men playing whites when they should be on golds. Basically, if you tee off and barely pass the ladies tees, move the hell up.

I understand all the frustration, but I’m happy seeing golf become so popular. Unfortunately, I don’t have any suggestions for fixing pace of play that haven’t already been discussed.

Lots of women picking up the game lately. Which is great.
But follow the fricking dress code. As much as we enjoy looking, You can’t show up to play in tiny shorts and halters. This isn’t beach volleyball. Collared shirts are a requirement

I wouldn’t mind either.
But it’s the equivalent to one of us baws showing up to the course wearing bike shorts and a wife beater. Not very fair

I’ve never seen public courses as crowded as they are right now.
I don't mind busy or even groups of beginners, women, or children if they're managed correctly and the course is moving.
Right now there's too many drunk idiots and newbies either taking forever or hitting into the back of people in front of them. Saw someone almost get their skull cracked a few weeks ago by a guy who was so drunk he could barely stand up. Not a marshal in sight.

I’ve been to multiple courses recently around $100 with no real starter and no marshal that took over 5 hours. Not sustainable

The entire golf scene with the younger crowd is seen as a time to get hammered and just rip it.
Don’t get me wrong, we drink out there when we play but are we actually playing golf and having a beer.
These young kids are getting hammered while playing golf on the side. The entire point of them is to get fricked uo while hitting a ball.
