Do you tee off with a specific yardage in mind or just hit it as far as you can?

Specifically on shorter Par 4’s...say under 400 yards?

I used to try to get as close to the green as possible off the tee on these holes but lately have been focusing on trying to leave myself 90-110 yards in, which is my sweet spot with the wedges.

My proximity to the hole seems to have improved despite having longer approach shots. Now if the putter would just cooperate.

Cool story bro

Depends on how wide the fairway is.

If in your example, a Standard 400 yard par 4 with a reasonable fairway, I swing at about as hard as possible without reaching that last few percentage points of speed where it gets out of control.

Depends on the hole and situation. Is there any good/bad place to miss? I weigh my chances of going there and decide. Wind can come into play. How I feel about my driver that day. Am I playing in a real tournament and looking to be aggressive for a certain pin placement.

Hit it as hard as I can. I don’t miss many fairways these days

I normally let it fly, it’s one of the most confident parts of my game, I also almost away hit the 3 hybrid second shot on par 5s. Seems like I every time I try to lay up I end up shittin the bed. Probably had something to do with lack of confidence in long irons. But I do agree with other posters the hole can dictate a lot, Along with familiarity with course.

I tend to focus on accuracy more than distance on shorter holes. I can hit a 150 club. That distance is much easier from center cut. I dial it back just enough to keep my same shot shape (fade) so I dont pull it.

I’m not a big hitter so even IF I crush one, I usually have a full shot in.

Unless it is a very short par 4 like 300.

So I am teeing off with the goal to find the fairway and then hit my 7 wood up by the green or on it.

Hazards/trouble influences that more than anything for me. The only time I try to avoid hitting it too close (40-70 yards) on a short par 4 is if I know it’s a front pin location on a firm green probably over a bunker and the holes playing downwind. I know I’ll need a little more spin on that and want to take a fuller swing

What is the situation, casual outing with friends? Tournament? Winning or Losing? all play a pretty big factor to me, but if its a casual round with people that I know. You best bet I'm gonna get a tee ball on that green!

Anything 400 and below i hit a 3 iron off the tee. Leaves me about an 8 iron into the green from 400. Unless I can drive the green or get near the edge of it.

My strategy when I'm playing for score is to hit the club off the tee to leave me about 90-120 in, which are my gap wedge down to lob wedge. With those clubs, I expect to be inside 15 feet for birdie consistently.

I will gladly pull out a 4-iron or hybrid, and hit a stock PW or GW into a green.

Use to think bombs away every hole though. Learning to play smarter golf has lowered my scores.

Even on shorter par 4's most golfers hit the ball 270 or less, so most will be going 100 ish even with driver.

There are some tight short par 4's on my home course that I will go 4iron/3hybrid and go 200-230 and then take 130-150 in. Rather that than either be OB or have no approach shot in but 100 yards out with my driver.

Completely depends on the specifics of the hole. Straightaway 370 yard hole with no trouble, I have no problem pulling driver. Add in a well positioned fairway bunker, hazard or dogleg and that changes.

They say the 50-yard chip is an amateur's worse nightmare.

Driver on almost all par 4's unless the hole dictates less than that. But I'm not a long hitter, so I rarely hit less than 3 wood off the tee.

At my home course (Oakbourne) I am hitting 3-wood on #1, #6, #10, and #12 because those are all short par 4's with doglegs, trees, or bunkers directly in play with a driver.
