i hate those it always leaves me with a 30-40 yard chip and i dont really like that distance

Same here. 30-60 yard shots are dumb...especially if you have a bunker or water in between you and the flag. That’s why I started laying back some on these short par 4’s

If the hole is shorter that 275 yards, I will not hit driver(unless I think I can drive the green and at anything over 250, I better get a lot of roll). I normally lay up between 100 and 150 yards. On long par 5 I will try to get 3rd short around 125 yards. If I am in between 60 and 20 yards, I'm screwed.

I learned how to handle this distance and it has helped my game tremendously. Both from a scoring standpoint and getting up and down.

I used to come out blasting with the driver every time, because who doesn't love to "possibly drive" the green on a short Par 4? Every Par 4 green I've ever driven has resulted in a birdie at best.

I've been trying to play smarter the last few months, and have had more GIRs lately than I did of years and years of just blasting a driver and hoping for the best. I've found a great club in my 7 wood, and the distance and accuracy off the tee has been great lately. I'm not playing from the tips, so 230-240 off the tee is plenty long enough at almost all of our local courses in the area.

Very open ended question.
Yes, you could hit a driver every time. Is it the right play? That will depend on the hole, if you are playing for fun, and what your strengths are.
Played this hole on Saturday. I have to really be in the groove to hit driver ... and I don't on this hole. The fairway in front of the green is no more than 20-30 yards wide. I do not have a fade, so I have to play more conservatively. My target is the 7th and 8th bunker from the left. I usually hit 3-hybrid or 4 iron and have an 80 yard wedge in.

Agree. Most difficult distance to hit consistently for me. Would rather lay up to 80-90. Full sand wedge (56°).

I’m not near accurate enough with my distance control with a driver to try and aim for a yardage. I aim for an angle I want my approach to be coming from and I deal with the yardage results from there.

If I need to, I’ll use a fairway wood off the tee. If I’m using the driver though, it is a full swing.

I have no problems hitting less than driver if the hole calls for it, the course I play most is 6400 yds so there are a handful of shorter narrow par 4’s that I hit iron or hybrid off of.

It mostly depends on where the trouble is at, my natural shot is a fade with the driver but with my hybrid it is a draw. So if the trouble is on the left and it’s open right, even on a shorter hole the driver is the smarter play for me.

In fact I’ve learned on my home course that #4 and #8 are driver holes despite the fact that they are both ~350yds because there is OB left and no trouble right. The flip side of that is #14 which is a hybrid hole for me even though it’s a 420 yd hole, there is a lake on the right hand side 260 yards away and not much trouble left. I usually hit my hybrid 220 with a 240 max so I can swing freely at the lake, usually it will draw back into the fairway, but even if it goes straight it won’t reach the lake, this leaves me between a 6 and 4 iron into the green. If I hit driver I would have to hit a draw and hope it doesn’t go straight into the lake. I can draw a driver but why take the risk for an extra 30-60 yards? I’m not THAT much better with an 8 iron than a 5 iron

75-85 is 60-70 with a different club.
