Can someone explain how GHIN actually works?

I’m kinda confused in how my handicap is what it is. For most of the year I’ve been a 16.2. But recently my index jumped up to a 17.4 after shooting one of the lowest scores of my life. My last twelve scores are as follows:
96, 88, 96, 94, 91, 96, 93, 100, 105, 95, 93, 86
86 being the last round I played and when it jumped from 16.4 to 17.4. The rounds I didn’t break 100 were on a buddies trip and I was a tad inebriated for them. 4 of the 12 were on the buddies trip, every other score was at my home course. Can someone help me understand how it works please?

Your handicap is basically the average of your 8 lowest scores out of your last 20.
But there are other factors at play. The slope based on the tees you play is a big one. If you shoot 95 from the tips, that could lower your handicap compared to shooting 90 from the Men’s tees. So it also depends on the course and tees.

I'm sure someone can explain better about the calculation but I do know that it doesn't use all of your scores. If you go to your "STATS" page and look at all of your scores, only the ones with * by them are the ones used for calculating your handicap. I'm not sure how it picks which rounds to use but I do know that not all are used. I doubt this clears anything up for you but at the least it is a bit of more useless information I guess....

This is a big factor. Also, if you are home, away, or in a tournament makes a difference. An 82 in a tournament weighs heavier than an 82 at home even on the same course.

That’s what I was thinking how it got figured up. But if that is the case shouldn’t my handicap go down and not up after logging an 86 and 2 other rounds in the 80s and only one round above 95 in my lowest 8 all at the same course?

It uses your last 20 rounds. So a lower asjusted score must have dropped off when you posted the 86.

Make sure to select the tees correctly when you go to put the score into the system.
I’ve caught myself putting a round I played from white tee down as a gold tee round.
It changes the differential significantly.

Nope, calculated the same. Simply helps a handicap committee find out if someone plays better or worse in competition

Handicap index is kind of a hybrid average of the lowest score differentials.
Calculate your score differentials like this:
(113/Slope) x (adjusted gross score - course rating - PCC adjustment)
Most of us likely don't have to worry about adjustments, so simplified it is just:
(113/Slope) x (Score - Course Rating)
Depending on how many rounds you have to calculate, you would take some version of the average of your lowest differentials.
3 differential: Lowest differential minus 2
4: Lowest differential minus 1
5: Lowest differential
6: Average of lowest 2 differentials minus 1
7-8: Average of lowest 2 differentials
9-11: Average of lowest 3 differentials
12-14: Average of lowest 4 differentials
15-6: Average of lowest 5 differentials
17-18: Average of lowest 6 differentials
19: Average of lowest 7 differentials
20: Average of lowest 8 differentials
That will give you an index. From there, you can find calculators online that would allow you to enter your index and the slope and rating of the course you are going to play, and it will generate your cap for that course.
